POLL - Himalayan Imports New Domain Name

Make himalayan-imports.com your main one

To me this is the best for reasons expressed above. Direct connection to company and easiest to transfer by word of mouth.

"Where'd you get that cool knife? It's from HI, Himalayan Imports, just look up www.himalayan-imports.com with a hyphen" They/you won't forget.

"...www.himalayanimports.com, one word" would work too.

And they're more likely to look than if you have to say, "use a search engine and look for Himalayan Imports" because you can't remember the URL or know they won't. Which I recently had to tell someone to do when they said their dad would love one of those "nice little machete-things" upon seeing my 15" AK.

Also they'll wind up at the home page, instead of the first search result sending them to the middle of Howard's FAQ or a Cliff Stamp review. Not bad places to visit, but maybe confusing to start out with. A couple bum hits, and they might give up.

Only drawback is somebody might not be able to spell himalayan. But I think HI doesn't have the same name recognition.

Comments on meta keywords vs $ to register a zillion other names I'll leave to others.

I think it would be hard to go wrong with registering variants of www.himalayan-imports.com though:

www.himalayanimports.com
www.himalayan_imports.com

EDIT: second one doesn't have a blank, it has an underscore--maybe too unix-nerd for nowadays...
since it's invisible in HTML, probably forget it.

These are worth the $/trouble IMO. Don't know if it's worth paying for ones with common typos though.

Think we've decided to go with www.himalayan-imports.com for the primary domain name and www.khukuri-gurkha-knife-nepal-kukri.com as a secondary/pointer name. Supposed it takes 48-72 for the name-change to 'take' though, so don't try looking at www.himalayan-imports.com just yet.

Thanks for all of the comments, advice & suggestions.

cheers,
--Ben

I hate to sound repetitive by just saying "me too", but I can't stress how much a difference this makes.

Thanks for the link dhuff! I just preregistered 5 .pro domains and 1 .name domain! I don't know if I'll get 'em, but I put in a few good offers... :)

I can't believe I'd been doped all this time by network solutions. I've been paying domain fees for about 6 years now and never gave it a second thought. I guess next time it comes up, I'll go with one of the ones you listed above.

let's see, so US$800-900/year?? I was aiming more at the search engine than people typing names directly into the address bar. Personally, I hate typing things into the address bar, so even when I know the address I often 'search' for it (or put a 'quick link' onto one of my own pages).

thanks for the input all.

Actually, for him, more like $2500-3000 per year. :( But, the internet is his business - his way of life. Of course, he also charges $450/hr for his services, so it's really just a drop in the bucket. ;)

Best wishes to HI with the new website.

If you need any custom graphics or other web stuff, give me a holler.

Bill,

That is hilarious! :D :D :D

I have never thought of that. I've got to tell it to this guy. He will laugh all day.

You certainly put a smile on my face today!
