Poll: How do you sharpen your knives?

I have a Lansky that's probably 15 years old- I use that & my Sharpmaker. I pretty much suck at freehand sharpening. I can get a "good" edge- quite adequate for most things & most people wouldn't complain, but I can't get that final "wow" edge. I wind up destroying the adequate edge & have to start over.

Free hand on diamond, ceramic, or Arkansas, depending on blade steel. Strop on leather belt (not always).

Hmmm. Learned by freehand with arkansas stones, then went to a lansky for a while, then back to free hand with stones. Now I use a belt sander 120 grit to set bevel, 600 grit to polish, then strop using rouge and old belt. Sometimes, I use a ceramic stick to touch up an edge.

Javahead, how is the O-1 going??
 
Lansky (diamond) for serious honing, hard Arkansas and ceramic stick for touch-ups and for achieving the final hair-popping edge.

I have always used Arkansas stones, but lately I have also been using ceramic rods and Spyderco's ceramics, too. Just got a diamond stone to make it easier to deal with my BG-42. On my carbon steel blades I like to do a really light pass with a steel to really bring out the edge instead of stropping.

I use norton crystalon 200-1000 mostly
I also have f-m-c oregon abrasives water stones with a norton 8000 grit water stone for finishing.

for touch ups I use an ultimate edge diamond rod.

I can put a hairpopping edge on all my knives. I have trouble when I hand sharpend someone's knife that they never ever sharpened it over 3 years. that is alot of grinding by hand.
