I posed the suggestion to Sal of introducing a longer bladed S.P.O.T. knife instead of discontinuing it. The SPOT is a truly comfortable knife in the hand, but everyone I know says they would prefer a slightly longer blade. So, the question is:

What do you, the consumers, think of a SPOT knife with a longer blade, or even a Harpy style blade (but the existing handle)?

I'm honestly not interested. For me, the SPOT's just fine as a neck knife. The only thing it needed was a cord-wrapped handle. I'm really sorry the little guy didn't sell, but I'm not convinced a bigger blade'll save it.

Please keep in mind that by "bigger" I only mean about an inch. I think what throughs people off on it right now is the blade to handle proportion. It just looks odd. the thing that first grabs alot of people about a knife (or anything, for that matter) is how it looks (cool factor). I even thought to myself when I first saw the SPOT that it was interesting in design and theory, but it looked 'wrong' because of it's proportions. I didn't fall in love with the knife until I actually held one. Then I fell hard :D !

Please, all Spyderco fans, give us your input on this subject. We're looking at the complete dissolution of a great nife with greater potential if a few tweeks were done. Yes, it is a little self serving, because I really don't want to see this knife style dissappear. these are the ideas that have been run passed Sal:

Longer blade (up to 3 inches)
Different blade styles (Dodo, Harpy, and Ronin styles on existing handle)
Removable Micarta scales (or option without...just get rid of the AUS6 version)

He seems genuinely interested, so please let him know what you think, whether you're a fan of the original or not. Thanks, everyone!

Actually, I kinda like the length.
I'd like to see a different blade shape; something with a little more point for jabbing or punching.
A short arrowhead or spear point would get my attention.
However, I'd like to see it in VG-10 without the micarta treatment.

By the way, I read somewhere recently that the word micarta and the word formica share the same word-part, mica, because they have the same epoxy/binder/matrix/glue holding them together.

I think the Spot, Dodo, and cricket for that matter, and incredibly designed knives, but I just don't like the idea of the parrot's beak blade (or whatever you want to call it). The Spot is a very strong design, just like the Dodo; would like to see both with a different blade shape.

personally, i would love to see the spot handle with a reverse-curved blade sharpened on the top side, with a blunt tip. currently i carry a bear claw on my swiftwater rescue pfd (i am a volunteer rescue squad member and whitewater instructor) but i am always holding it upside down to cut clothing and such. i realize this is an extremely specialized request, but no one else is doing it. think of how easy it would be cut a pair of pants or shirt off of someone and it would allow better ergonomics for freeing someone from tangled lines. ya know, it would also be great for cutting seatbelts. my military is just plain risky for that kind of stuff.

does anyone else see the utility of this? rescue knives seem to be most often used to cut people out of stuff, yet the handle to blade ergos are backwards.

hmm?

I agree with Joe. I just don't think a hooked point blade is as utilitarian or attractive as other blade shapes. That's why I chose a Navigator over a Cricket. But it's just an opinion.

i think a good variation would be to add another inch & change the blade shape at the spine a bit so it meets the tip in a straight line rather than in a downward curve (it'll look a little like a reverse S ronin blade)
the tip has to face forward though (not like in the cricket or civilian)

I'm happy with the length of the blade on mine but, like some others, I'd like a different shape. Something similar to the Meerkat would be nice.

I'd go for either. It has a blade that is a little too small, or a handle that is a little too big. Or, change it to a meerkat-esque shape. But, For that knife, I think that Spyderco was just too late on the neck knife craze. I did a review, though, and thought it was a great knife.

Ditto! I'd be happy with either a Wharncliffe or hawkbill blade from 2 1/2 - 3".

I am with you guys. the SPOT is a great design, but just weld a salsa or ronin style blade on it.

Look at the bright side, at least, they will be cheap on Ebay forever!!!! (five years)

I can't imagine seeing them on Ebay very often, considering that everyone I know who has one loves it. I know I can't see myself parting with either of mine.

me neither, although i have the budget AUS 6 version is still love the knife. But i would love it even greater if it blade was longer!!
