Poll: What a dumb topic!!!!

What I like in a topic or post is to see
someone who is new to knives come "on board"
and be impressed with the knowledge and
attitude of the people who make up this
forum. I also enjoy posts which seek to
educate other members of this forum, be it
in the form of a knife review, analysis of
a new material or a knifemaking tip.

What I do not like are attacks on people or
products. These are inexcusable and merely
degrade the person writing the inflammatory
post and make this forum less productive.

Even worse are the attacks by one maker on
another maker's products. These contribute
nothing to the forum, IMHO, and the
credibility of the attacker is simply
established as zero.

The worst thing that can happen to this
forum, or any other (IMHO) is that people
who have helped to build knifemaking and
posess vast amounts of firsthand knowledge
of knifemaking and testing, will not join
in the discussion. Just last week I
corresponded with a knifemaker whose name
would be instantly recognizable to every
person on this forum. He said that he would
never contribute to this forum because of
the lack of professionalism and the "pack"
mentality he saw demonstrated thus far.

There it goes...40 years of knifemaking
knowledge available to this forum down the
tubes.

Mark

Stihl:

I'm here to discuss knives and most anything connected to them.I think a great post is one that asks a question concerning knives (not to be confused with those that troll or flame or seek personal social agendas).

Sometimes the best post is the one from a new member that asks such a simple question that most of us have taken for granted (or never knew in the first place).

Let's get back to knives!

Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way!

I like a post that gives me the oppurtunity to learn something about knives that I did not know before.

I like the reviews from people here who are not afraid to go out and beat the living s**t out of a knife to find out if it is "All That". This often times drives my decision to go out and get said knife more often than not.

I love the information and idea flow that takes place on this Forum at all hours of the day and night.

I hate the petty bickering and posturing between the makers on this Forum.

The Mad Dog bashing is a moot point anymore and does not need any further embellishing.

Lynn Thompson bashing is uncalled for anymore. It's all been said.

Apologies are too prevelant at times and oftentimes are not needed at all if people would think before they lash out, err, I mean, type. Enough already.

All that being said, For having 5000+ people all communicating in one area, this place is overall a pretty pleasant place to spend time, have a great time and learn new things about our favorite subject all at once.

KUDOS to Mike and Spark for making it happen!

Sorry STIHL and Tim.What I really meant to say was:I love posts where Newbies are given a good welcome and have their questions answered by experts.Discovering this place is fun. Also posts where people share knowledge that would take years to learn by trial and error. That really helps up and comers and is refreshing. In the business I'm in poeple don't readily share their shop secrets.Posts I don't like:mainly posts I make when I engage my mouth before my brain. Then when I see it again later I really feel like a dork.Kind of humbling.

I love any post that teaches me something I did not know, be it knife related or not(preferable knife related

)
I love reading knife reviews. Especially destructive reviews. It is very interesting to see claims put to the test.

I pretty much like any post that does not fall under my "dislike" category.

Dislikes: Off topic posts, character bashing posts, unnecessarily rude replies, etc. etc.

The controversial topics that were shown with a flaming icon are what drew me into these forums in the first place. I was looking for concrete, informative, help in making purchases, in learning about what is new, but first I had to find out if there was any "depth" to the discussion. Turned out there is plenty of passion about the subject around here, differences of opinions is what makes the boards lively. If we are all looking to pat each other on the back, that says something about the needs of who those hanging around here. I, for one, like the hot controversial topics that sometimes spawn from simple posts. But I like solid factual information about the subject as well. That's what I think the strength of these threads are. Keep it up.

I like about anything and everything. My favorite are probably questions about knives, because I get to see everyones veiw on it and learn something along with whoever posted the question. And once in awhile I can help out too. I also like stuff about new knives, designs, reviews, knifemaking tools, new knifemaking materials, ways to do things, etc.
I even like the posts where we get to arguing about which knife is better or which knife is the right one to use or buy, as long as people support their opinions.Really the best posts and the most fun to read are the ones that people have a variety of very different and strong opinions on. Like that post about the most over rated folder. Just about everyone disagreed, or at least there were 2 sides of it- for and against sebenzas, but we all had fun with it.

This is AMOST on topic, but I like it when people state the topic of their thread in the title.

There are many categories in this forum, and it can take long enough to click on the titles that interest me. It takes even more time to click on the "It's happening!!!" threads only to find out that someone just washed his socks (dramatic re-enactment, not referring to anybody specifically).

I really like to see pics of beginning knifemakers first knives. I also get a kick out of seeing established knifemakers first knives too. All begining knifemakers get a virtual overload of tips, hints and encouragement.

I dislike seeing knifemakers slam each other. If you don't like the way someone conducts their business keep it to yourself. Their customers (or lack of) will get the word out. By slams they gain nothing and lose that which is hardest to earn...respect.

I think others have said it but I want to chime in. I love the ability to post questions and get quick, informed answers. And second to that is all of Vampire Gerbil's stuff. BTW, where is the big rodent anyway?

I think Maddog bashing is kinda funny but in all honesty, it isn't Maddog that I find funny, but that the topic goes on endlessly. I have to admit I throw in a joke once and a great while about Maddog but in reality, I know doodly squat about the man or his knives. I'm just laughing at the perpetual topic, and the fact that everyone takes this all so seriously.

Everyone loves a little humor but often it's at the expense of others. But I'd rather see humorous posts about MD than just outright bashing and namecalling.

We take this all so seriously don't we? THAT'S WHY VG RULES!! I will put the tactical Micra up against any and all comers. More humor and

I log onto BladeForums almost every day, and I don't do it to learn, I do it for fun. Of course, having fun here most always leads to learning. That's what I like about this place.

Months ago, I used to start from the top of the main page, and work my way down. Reading EVERY thread.

Of course, by now, reading every thread thoroughly and even responding if I have something informative, constructive, or incuraging to say...is a near impossibility. This place has grown so much
smile.gif
!!!

That being said, I just go into the threads that interest me. Many times I go into threads that really don't interest me(because I do not know anything about the subject), and I find I don't have jack squat to add to the discussion-so I move on.

Usually I read the topic, then look to see who started the thread. That can usually give me any idea of where, or in what attitude, the thread is going. Then I'll glance over at how many replies there have been to see if the thread topic has been popular.

Yeah! Drop the chalupa...

I am one of those new guys here that asks basic questions. You're welcome
biggrin.gif
. Actually, I've gotten good detailed answers to most my questions, and haven't been criticized for asking things like "What is Micarta?" I must admit that I don't know much about Mad Dog bashing, because that's not the kind of thing I'm interested in reading.

I like it when I see a knife maker answer a question about one of his (or his company's) knives. It's really pretty exciting to see a maker of ANY product actually interacting with consumers of his product.

I have seen less flaming here than I am used to seeing at other boards I frequent. If people want to discuss, argue, etc., I think that it can be constructive, but comments like "Oh, yeah?! Brand X is for fags! Real men use Brand Y!" are a turn-off, and fortunately, not seen too often here.

I have some understanding of knives, but I've learned more here already.

Thanx,
Biff

I hate poll threads -- especially polls that have nothing to do with knives -- "Poll: how many members live in towns that begin with T? Sound off!!!" I looked at this thread because I thought it was about how dumb poll threads are....

I seldom have time for threads with null titles like "Knife Question." It's probably some newbie who can't be blamed, but there are so many forums and only 24 hours in the day ... he'll figure out why he doesn't get informed answers eventually, or maybe he won't ... the fittest survive and those who don't have the brains to make it on the real net go to AOheLl....

I swore off replying to tactical threads posted on the general forum a long time ago, when it became clear to me that people are posting them here because they don't want people who know what they're talking about coming into the discussion. Of course some of them are started by newbies who haven't noticed the tactical forums yet (see above), but others are started by people who evidently don't want a discussion with people who know what they're talking about; they'd rather propound their nonsensical pet beliefs to others who don't know any better than they do....

I like information that helps me decide what to buy but I especially like information on how to use knives, and how to sharpen, modify, even make knives. We do knife reviews better than the magazines, but we also do a lot of things magazines basically don't do -- not advertising or consumer information at all, not selling.

Tests are great but they don't belong in this forum; we have another forum for that.

I love a good Mad Dog controversy and I vote for more of them! Where else can we talk about fascinating subjects like secretly marked flying saucer keys??? I don't even go to alt.conspiracy any more. The only trouble is we don't have Mad Dog threads going all the time ... sometimes a dry spell can last for weeks, and I need my fix!

Yes I agree,polls do suck .....
But thats just to BAD!!!!!We all can post as we feel as long as we put it where it belongs.Ive always kept my topics in the correct forum.Check my past. This is the first time.I see people bashing people everyday. So seeing that general has the most visits it would be the best place to put it.Maybe if people could get an idea of what crawls up
so -n- sos A$$ this would be a better place.

There's way too many great threads to pick out what I specifically like. There's just a few kinds of threads I don't like. And I take Kit Carson's advice in this area: I don't complain about them, I simply ignore them, and let the people who enjoy them participate.

The threads I don't like:

- Polls. Often, these seem just targetted at high-volume, people often post without any supporting arguments, or reading anyone else's responses. I responded to this one because I saw the chance to blow off a little steam about polls, in a poll thread; appeals to my sense of irony
smile.gif

- Any other post meant to be high-volume and be stuffed with data rather than information. "Where you all from" is a prime example.

- Any post with a topic such as "IMPORTANT -- PLEASE READ" or any other topic which does not give me any idea about what's inside. It's very rare for me to even look at those posts. If your post is really so important, give it an accurate subject and people will come running. If people don't come running, maybe your "important" topic wasn't so important after all.

Joe

I like it when the topic explains the subject of the thread. Bashing products and manufacturers is just fine. What I don't like is when people attack the members who post topics or contribute to threads, particularly outside the scope of the thread's topic. I love a hearty debate, but you don't say "this is a stupid thread, and you're a moron for starting it". I really get irked when people don't understand a topic and issue criticism about a topic out of their own imagination.

I like information about blades, alloys, and heat treatment. I'm still looking for that miracle substance like elven-forged mithril. I like ideas on knife sharpening. I'm still looking for that perfect edge. I don't mind fluff topics, if they are identified in the topic so I can skip reading them.
