poll: which knife do you keep by the bed?

Hoo boy! That's the last time I ask for "email notification" when I post a thread like this! Well, the EK will be replaced next week when my Busse #7 shows up! And the surefire 6Z now has a friend: the 3-cell maglite. Thanks for the tip, guys! Question: where can I find the hardware to set up my 870 with the bayonet? That is way too cool!

The 590s come with bayonet lugs, as it's a military issue shotgun. I don't know if it's possible to add a lug aftermarket to any other models

On the headboard is a knife that I made out of a file with a cord wrapped handle and a Surefire 6R. There is a Ruger SP101 357 in the night stand. In the closet next to the door is a Combat Commander (loaded, round in chamber, hammer down)with three loaded magazines and a Mini 14 with four 30 round mags. On wife's side is a S&W 357 Centennial and a bat.

There's an old superstition in Finland to the effect that a knife stuck into the wall over your bed will ward off nightmares.

(The Wife just told me that "dream catchers" are so much more politically correct!)

SpecialK and anybody else who might be wondering if some of the posters in this thread might be ... um ... maybe a little bit ... weird? -- look at the analogous threads in the tactical forums and see what we sleep with.

One of the tactical forums -- was it Racegun's Tactical Lady forum? -- has an old thread asking what members bring to church with them, too....

I don't know about going into detail here ... the members of this forum are so sheltered.... In general terms, when most of us undress we lay out some of our daily loadout by the bed, leaving a few items in our pants (or transfering them to tomorrow's pants in advance) in case we might want to dress hurriedly in the middle of the night for some reason, and we all have a considerable assortment of items that live bedside more or less permanently, too.

To score high on the tactical forums you would have to have more than one weapon in a forearm sheath or ankle holster while you sleep -- extra points for three or more -- and beside your bed ... sheesh, it's hard to think of anything that would score high beside or under your bed ... if it's belt-fed, maybe. Spears score higher than swords. No score for machetes; everybody keeps a machete on their bedside table. Anti-tank weapons and mortars score about the same, depending on size....

Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but not by much.

And by the way, nobody on the tactical forums would ever think for a moment he or she didn't need a knife by his or her bed no matter how many guns.... Some of you guys ought to read the gun vs. knife threads ... you have many hours of reading ahead of you ... learn all about the advantages and disadvantages of each and when to use which and why few of us could ever be found dead with only one of the two....

Sebenza next to Sure-Fire 6P as pocket call-out. Rinaldi TKK in nightstand drawer, Busse INFI Steel Heart in nightstand base. Mr. Colt is only a few feet away as well in case a party gets "interesting".

The pen is mightier than the sword...outside of arm's reach. Modify radius accordingly for rifle.

Years ago i moved to a big, bad, very scary city, alone in a fleabag rooming house; people screaming at night, sounds of breaking glass, blood on the sidewalk in the AM, etc. I also was very poor. I bought an OLD HICKORY carving knife, about 8 inch blade at the grocery store. I would stick it in the drawer of the bedside table and shut the drawer on it, leaving the handle protruding. It is amazing how quickly one can learn to sit up in bed in the dark and swipe a knife up in hand!

I keep a 3D cell Maglite, a HiPower stoked with Glaser Safety slugs and 115 gr. Federal hollowpoints and an Ek dagger.
Under my bed are approx. 55+ fixed blades of many types. Be careful(!) looking for stray socks!

i'm glad to read that other folks besides my SO fall asleep with a knife on their person (not just on the bedside table). the first time i noticed it ("oh, WOW, hon...oh. OH. that's your KNIFE, i thought...um...."), i was a wee bit surprised. i don't know why i should have been, there's knives next to both sides of our bed, knives in our bathroom, knives in my antique chest, and several knives on each of our persons during the day--why be different at night?

mr. mattis: dreamcatchers traditionally have small symbols of things near and dear to us dangling from their webs...so hang a 'catcher up thar, and clip on one of your wee pen knives, or a wm & henry hummingbird ("drool, drool"), or a mini police....

cut those nasty bad nightmares to ribbons

who sleeps on her side, so nowhere comfy to clip a folder at night...but an ankle holster...hm...nah, my cats sleep on my feet, it would just make 'em all cranky and then NO ONE would get any sleep...

LOL

My room design happens to have most my stuff all in similar range, basically next to me (smallish room) but the one I grab for in case is my Ka-Bar Next Gen. I'd grab for my Project I, but I don't have one...lol...

...yet

A Cold Steel LTC Kukri.... just in case the jungle attacks too...

I keep a Cold Steel 9" Tanto hung behind the dresser and immediately next to my bed.
I also have a 12 guage automatic riot shotgun in the closet and a Colt .45 auto in the dresser drawer.
Be sure to ring the door bell when you visit in the wee hours

A 12 gauge shotgun. When I get awakened from a deep sleep, I don't think I'd be ready for some confrontations with a knife. All I want to do is aim generally down the hall and pull the trigger. I'm guaranteed to hit something .

A 20" Chainpuri Khukuri (Village model from HI), a Spyderco Endura and my escrima bag which contains: a few pairs of rattan sticks, a pair of hardwood sticks and a Pakistani made double edged "killing knife"

. The last one is a POS, but it has a nice sharp tip that penetrates very nicely

.

If the intruder stays down stairs, they can have whatever they want (TV, stereo, etc are down there), but if they come up stairs (where the important stuff is - my wife and child) they're going to have to earn their pay!

Hmm... Nightstand equipment...

Let's see:

a) Glock 23 w/ 165gr Gold Dots
b) 3 "D" cell Maglite
c) way over on the dresser either an Axis Lock or a CRKT M-16 (whichever I'll be carrying the next day).

Jon

I don't want any uninvited guests getting within knife range!
alarm system, 2 dogs, 2-3D maglights (one for wife or backup), Springfield- Les Baer Tactical .45 with spare mag, Glock 23 nearby.
I sleep very well without knives, Thank you.

I keep a Benchmade Nimravus and a Spyderco Bill Moran next to my bed. Underneath it is a locked safe with a Glock 34 with a M3 tac light attached (hence the name Nightglock), and with it is my Emerson Commander. Also have a Surefire 6P on the nightstand. Soon to be next to my bed, an Emerson CQC7 and the Police Utility Knife.
