I just got a couple more small blocks of Pommelle sapelle in today and really like the wood. I was wondering why it is so rarely seen on knives. The few pics I've found on here look great, but seems to be a rare wood choice. Is there any negatives to using this wood, difficulties finishing it, just not enough "wow" factor in the name, too inexpensive of a choice? I'm curious as I love the colours, pattern and chatoyance seen and look forward to putting it on some blades in the future.

Thanks for any input.

Its rare, and overlooked for some reason. Its one of my favorite woods. The light weight is a drawback, but if you mail them to me, I'll suck some cactus juice in them for you and send them back. I have done a few blocks of mahogany with good results. PM me if you are interested.

I love it. It definitely benefits from being stabilized. IMHO, the polymer/process that K&G uses will give you the best results for highlighting chatoyance in a wood like this.

I really wish I could have shot this outside, because the figure in the wood dances in sunlight. But we don't have sunlight at the time of year I finished this knife. ;) LMAO

Thanks for the replies and video guys! I fell in love with the subtle "crushed velvet" look of it, kind of like a few pieces of non curly but active Koa I have.

Willie, I've been thinking that a face to face should be in order some day if you are interested, I'll shoot you an email when I remember- just leaving work now. We are so close it wouldn't make sense to mail! I grew up between Gibbons and Redwater so Morinville is stomping grounds territory!!

Any more pics of knives with it are greatly appreciated!
Any tips to finishing it that are different than other woods?

The lighter wood in the body of the handle and scabbard are Sapelle, but it's kinda hard to make out here.

I'm up for that! send me a PM!

Can't send pm and you don't have an email turned on my friend. Feel free to send me an email and I'll return it.

Mr. Rader unfortunately I can not see your picture.
