Poor finish on Manix 2 XL :(

Was waiting and waiting for the XL, but it looks like the finish is messed up a bit. Spyderco said it was from the grind lines, but I'm seeing more of a solution used for the laser etching? Let me know if this finish is a concern. Thanks.

To me, it looks like a variation in the grind lines. I wouldn't worry about it at all. Once you get some scratches on it, you'll forget about it. You are going to use it, right?

I see what you mean. You could try using some Flitz to polish out that section of the blade and even out the appearance. Flitz will remove any discoloration/stains and help even out the appearance of the grind lines. Go easy on the polishing, though, especially over the logo. I personally wouldn't worry about it too much, especially if you're planning to make your Manix a user.

It looks like something happened during grinding process. This certainly should be a concern for a safe queen. If you are planning to use it, you need to decide how bad does this bothering you. Blade will get plenty of scratches, but I do not think that they will reduce visibility of different finish. You can try to resurface entire blade.

You guys are over looking the fact that the blade finish is not perfect out of the factory, instead just making reasons for why its ok to just live with it. It doesnt matter if you use it or not or whether you will get scratches or not, when you buy something new you should have certain expectations out of the box.

What you're missing is Spyderco doesn't make aesthetically-perfect knives. They make functionally-great knives. Those looking from the former should look elsewhere.

From what i recall spyderco takes pride in their quality of fit and finish. As far as the spydercos I own they have all come perfectly out of the box, I wouldnt expect anything less from spyderco, specially not an uneven blade finish

If it bothers you send it back to where you bought it

Exactly. At this price-point, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest, but if it does bother the OP, he should send it back to the seller for an exhange or refund.

I would not be an issue for me, but I understand how one would want it to be "perfect" out the box. I'll just join the chorus of Brother Rycen and others who say to send it back if its an issue for you. But I would keep it, and fondle, use, hoard it and otherwise play with it. Poor little knifey doesn't feel wanted.

Flitz it or return it. ;)

This is true, but keep in mind human beings work at the place where they are made. Humans make mistakes from time to time. There is no upside to being such a hardliner, aside from reaping the benefits on consistently assured diisappointment.

I 3rd using some polish. I have found mother's mag polish to be excellent, but then again, so is Flitz! Like said, DO NOT polish hard as it then may end up lighter than the surrounding blade.

P.S. I really don't think I would have entitled the post "Poor finish". That conjures up more that what you have with that knife.

Taking pride in it and guaranteeing it are not the same.

I've seen $50,000 cars with small mars in paint finish.
This is a knife.
That is not a defect.
Use it.

I am going to start using this as my default answer for all of the zillion "my knife has something wrong with it - what should I do?" threads.

If it bothers a guy to post about it on a forum, it bothers a guy enough to send it back.

It's a mass produced factory production piece, not a custom. But if it bothers the OP enough where he constantly thinks about it, go ahead and send it back. Sal and co will replace it.
