Poor Louis Glesser ! (Sal for the friends)

Hi Paul.

Actually this has been a question around our legal department for a while.

We prefer not to license designers as there is no way to control where the designs go. If a designer has a design they want to make, they can select their maker and we will license that maker. The fee is quite reasonable, it's more to cover the cost of the paperwork.

This also let's us see the design. If it's really innovative or new, we may want to run it as a collaboration model.
We also get to give the maker tips on some of the "tricks" we've learned. We're studying one of Jen's designs now.

I think the difference between the way we do it and a Pakistani copy is that we know about it and have approved of it. I might add that I did see a full sized knock-off of the Kiwi design in China.

Speaking of having custom work done, anyone know if Ron Cochrane is still gracing this site? I want to have some mods done to a Harpy (clip mounted on opposite scale and sambar stag piece applied to former clip-side).

I can't access the members search, and I've lost his address. If he isn't available, anyone else have a good suggestion?

No but he would actually be using the actual Spyderco Harpy blade and only converting it to a framelock, so he wouldn't need to be licensed in this case.

Interesting option. I'm PM you on it.

Oky, Sal, let's say I wanted a cutom maker to make me a knife with a handle exactly like the SPOT, but with a different blade shape, or an elongated blade. Since there is would be no use of the 'hole', would he still need to be liscensed for the handle shape? Thanks in advance!

The handle shape isn't licensed (I presume).
OTOH, Paul, sign me up for one of those full wharncliffe Kiwis. :) And, for God's sake, put a clip on the darn thing! ;)

Puuuuleeeeeezzzz Alex, I just spent yet another hour trying to figure out how in Gods name I'll ever be able to fill in the bomb crater left when I took the d#*! clip off a Kopa.

Hi J.Davey.

Technically, I guess you could "knock it off", there is no IP protecting it.

The fact that Fred Perin refined the finger hole over many years and I spent several months and more than 20 models developing the ergos for the handle, would indicate that there is some "ownership" there on our parts.

To do as you suggest and call it your own design would probably be in question.

Thanks for the info, Sal! I would never call it my design, for one simple reason; it's not. I just think (as you've read several times, I'm sure) that a SPOT with a slightly longer blade in a wharcliff or Ronin style would be very cool, and since having a custom done was suggested, I justed wanted to make sure it would be okay to do so.

I can live with the choices in the Spyderco catalogue.

As for the "Lego" knife, how many people would end up losing some flesh and blood? And half of them would probably try to sue, nevermind their own stupidity  Nah, i don't think the "Lego" idea is that great if it has a real Spyderco blade in it :)
