Actually this has been a question around our legal department for a while.
We prefer not to license designers as there is no way to control where the designs go. If a designer has a design they want to make, they can select their maker and we will license that maker. The fee is quite reasonable, it's more to cover the cost of the paperwork.
This also let's us see the design. If it's really innovative or new, we may want to run it as a collaboration model.
We also get to give the maker tips on some of the "tricks" we've learned. We're studying one of Jen's designs now.
I think the difference between the way we do it and a Pakistani copy is that we know about it and have approved of it. I might add that I did see a full sized knock-off of the Kiwi design in China.
