Poor mans kidex or the cost effective way

Use thin milk jugs or heavier HDPE like detergent or coffee containers? How did you heat it? Oven?
I've always used heavier HDPE - like 5 gallon buckets, kitty litter buckets, etc...
milk jug is a bit thin IMHO.
the thinner, softer stuff will shape if you dunk it in almost boiling water - or use a hair dryer on it.
the thicker stuff shapes better if you heat it to about 225.
the other nice thing about this process is it lets you fine tune a design - then use the "free" plastic as your kydex template.

Nice work. Not to be on the negtive side, I'm not so sure about he durability of milk jugs. Maybe a couple of layers would be in order. They puncture easily. I know for a fact that the heating of pvc and inhalation of the gases can be very toxic and cause long term problems. I have also wondered about the heating of Kydex. I don't remember any warnings about the fumes being posted.

...I know for a fact that the heating of pvc...

Snap!!! I build and repair inground swimming pools and I have a Greenlee pipe bender heat blanket! That puppy will heat schedule 80 6" PVC pipe until it wiggles like a wet noodle without burning it!

Getting old and having CRS is bad boys, but it beats the alternatives! :D

well I had some time today and tried my hand at a milk jug just to see if i could by no means will I be going into biusness anytime soon lol but not too bad for my first time I dont think, the grommets I got are a little on the big side would really like to find some smaller ones but the knife I made it for is a project in the works too .

A couple months ago, I traded in a beat up Craftsman axe head (that had been used as a splitting wedge) for a shiny new axe. After putting a nice, keen edge on it, I decided it needed some protection. I used the plastic from a cat litter bucket. It's about 1/16" thick and formed fairly well with a heat gun. The pop rivets I used aren't quite suitable, even with washers. I need to score some rivets from Doug.

Thanks. I hijacked the the idea from Kiah. You can see a picture of his work in this thread. The quality of my work cant compare to his even well enough to call it an homage. Maybe 'bastardization' fits better. :D

I hijacked it from somebody else. Not sure who. Kevin maybe?

I just realized that the axe is all cockeyed in the sheath. I should pay better attention before I take pictures.:o

You must be in a well ventilated area. Good thing, right?
