Poor Man's Metallurgical Microscope: Adding Top Side Illumination

Here's a YouTube video about how to modify a stereo transmission microscope (used in biology) into a top-illumination mono microscope.

The idea, of course, is very simple. Most top-illumination microscopes use a beam splitter to shine light onto the sample from directly above. So it's possible to sacrifice one eyepiece from a stereo microscope and shine light into it. That gives you top-illumination for the remaining eyepiece.

There are a zillion types of microscope illumination, so while having top-down is a nice option, it is not always sufficient for metallurgy. For example, it is sometimes nice to shine light in at an angle to "cast shadows" for greater contrast on scratches and grooves. For more info, you can check out Nikon's wonderful microscopy website.

Thanks for posting this Lagrangian. Have you gotten to do this mod or played around w/ this at all?
