BLACKSMITH_S_HAMMER.jpg

This is from a old us patent.

Looks like the hammer would hit the horn.

US Patent #273,793

Have some time on your hands, Google has a patent search feature. These are public domain.
I'm using some as clip art in a publication I'm working on. Great stuff, those old patent drawings.

A blacksmith I know around here who has a nice power hammer told he he and a friend made a hammer with a 16 lb sledge, a spring and a stirrup. Used a couple 2x6 hung from the rafters. Drilled a hole in the handle for the pivot point. Said it was fun and actually worked pretty good.

Yup, that is known as an "oliver hammer", common in blacksmith shops for hundreds of years in one form or another. That elaborate scrolled spring is not needed, the hammer just needs to pivot on the handle, with some type of spring to act as a return.

What about a guillotine? Use the weight of the hammer to pound. Then turn a crank on a shaft that looks like the crank out of a motor. Once you reach the peak release the crank and the hammer falls. Dunno if it would work, I've never hammered anything on an anvil.

Edit: Maybe use the pedals off a bicycle where you could have the sprocket running the hammer but when the hammer falls it doesn't jerk the handle out of your hand.

...I've never hammered anything on an anvil.

AtomicPC, though it's a fair distance from you, the biggest bladesmithing event of the year is held in McCalla, Alabama (outside Birmingham) in April. You would surely get to see just about all aspects of hammer and anvil work on knives demonstrated there. Batson Symposium Another announcment: Batson Announcement

Apologies for the OT, Gene. :)

Gene, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Your site has a wealth of information on it.

i say you replace the rope with a spring and the board with a motor that has a flywheel with a pin on the rim for the spring to connect to.
