On my "Blade Loot" thread I posted this photo of a Sambar carver that I hand picked at the Blade Show.
It is in its raw state just the way I found it, which isn't too bad.

FYI, I knew that I was looking in the right place when Greg Neely, MS settled in to hand pick the bin next to me.

After a lot of time and elbow grease here are some photos of the same piece of stag after I cleaned it up.
FYI the front depth is 1.125", The back is 1.75", and the length is 5.5". The gleam in the photos is a coat of mineral oil.
The only thing that I have done to it is to clean out the crud.

I am planning to leave it natural and undyed.

Many thanks to Ron Newton, MS who told me what to do with this bad boy.

In some jurisdictions these photos may be considered pornographic.

FAIR WARNING!

hot water, wire brush, dishwashing liquid, tweezers, nail file, nylon brush, mineral oil soak.
Several repetitions. A Dentist's pick would have helped a lot.

Wow. So have you decided on its fate yet? I'm sure it will make a lonely blade somewhere very happy.

Looks kind of like a walnut log. Left as it is I think it will make far a somewhat unique handle. I don't recall ever seeing a knife with this colour of stag used.

Hm... I think it looks nicer with the contrast. Like that it looks kinda pallid...

Maybe it would be nice dyed amber, and then a quick rub of fine sandpaper to highlight the high points.

That's a nice piece of stag.
I bought a similar piece last March, but didn't clean it up....

Pass the popcorn...stag that is :D

Nick,

I take it you don't approve.

Essentially, cleaning out the crud allows the popcorn to POP and improves the grip. If I do decide that I prefer the dark streaks with white highlights, I can always dye it, as Joss suggested. I have been giving it a soak or two in mineral oil and the whole piece is turning honey gold. My inclination is to leave it alone.

Best,

P

I think I would prefer it darker, but if you like it, leave it the way it is. It would be pretty boring if we all liked the same thing.

Great stag, but, like others said, I prefer it with the contrasting color. I think amber dyed, it would be a killer. Whomever dyes Newton's stag is very good. Can't help but think of STeven's thread on this very subject. But, I don't think I was qualified to comment, so... :)

That is a very beautiful Sambar stag carver. The popcorn on it is wonderful.Such stag carver in any colour is fine.Amber dyed as some have suggested will be fine. But lots of soaking in mineral oil is going to make it a gorgous honey coloured stag and that by itself will give it the appearance of a 60-70 year old stag carver.Whichever way you like it,you can't go wrong with such a lovely carver.Hope you get a great maker to use it in making you a wonderful bowie.

Raj,

You win the prize for reading my mind, the mineral oil is working its magic. I will post some new photos as the process progresses.
A few makers come to mind, I'll just have to think about it for a while.

Best,

P
