Popcorn Sambar Stag Carver from Blade

I will be looking forward to more pictures of this lovely Sambar stag carver.Sambar stag antler is one of my favourite handle materials,if not the favourite. This Sambar stag carver of yours is among the best I have seen. The pictures usually don't bring out all the beauty in such a carver, and if that is the case, this one must be a real knock-out.

Well, while that stag has Ron Newton written all over it, personally, I'd like to see it in a Don Hanson 13" "S" guard, W1 with a wild Hamon. :)

Great looking piece of stag. If I had seen it, you wouldn't have.
Nothing, imho, creates a better look on stag than nature and time. Can't duplicate nature and don't have the time. So, does the mineral oil ever harden and does it come out of the antler when it gets hot. Heat index is about 122 F here now. I have some antler that smells like French fries. Peanut oil doesn't harden, by the way. Do you boil it to help get penetration? I have had trouble getting much of anything to penetrate antler. Does glue stick to it once it has been treated with mineral oil?

The stag carver has been put to use.

Nice, very nice. Let's see the whole thing - been a long time since I've seen anything new from Don, and I bet this is pretty special.

you dont need to dye it, it will take some color just sitting in your closet, wipe it down occasionally with oil... go back and compare what it looks like in a few months with this photo.

ive got several carvers like that, been saving them for years, maybe i should use one now.

Yes, that's the best amber stag. The natural kind.

Mr Gill,I would appreciate a picture of the whole knife and also who the maker is.Would be nice to hear why you chose this particular maker and some thoughts on how you went about the knife construction.Thank you.

Raj,

The maker is undoubtedly Don Fogg, one of the concensus top masters in the business. I'm DYING to see the whole piece, so I hope he comes through for us. A good tease makes the pleasure all the more worth while but if he doesn't produce it will be sooo frustrating... :D

The maker is indeed Don Fogg, MSx2. I promise that I will post proper images as soon as the the knife arrives and a great one once Coop can squeeze me into his busy schedule. I don't believe that the one I have, does it any justice. Don has recently moved to California and is now teaching at: http://www.sierraforgeandfire.com/ in Exeter. I usually like to come up with a name for major pieces, and am thinking of call this one "The Exeter Bowie" because it is the first Bowie he has made in California.

Mr Gill, that gold cherry blossom should have made me think of Fogg. But one rarely sees a Fogg bowie for sale. And I thought getting him to make one,as a special custom would be very difficult.Being from NY you must have made ,"made him an offer he could not refuse", :D .

Raj,

While it might make a more exciting story...

My informants had located Don Fogg's secret hideout, I quietly dispatched Paulie Walnuts in my private jet...

The actual fact of the matter is that my FORMER ISP's spam filter was devouring Don's Email offerings.
On November 8, 2005 Don sent me the following message:

This email thing just isn't going to work for you. I will make you one,
how's that.

Don
