Hey guys,
Do any of you have pics of knives made with highly popcorned sambar stag? Im talking popcorn bumps ALL over the place?

I can get a crazy looking piece thats just about the right size for a big bowie I am making, but its pricey. I am trying to avoid making a mistake and sourcing it and then not being able to work it to what I want.

Most stag I see ends up getting ground smooth towards the ferrule, but I think i'd want to keep as much "popcorn" on the hadle as possible.

Also, any concerns with using that type of stag?

The only concern I'd have would be how to get my hands on it as fast as I could.
I would think you will for sure need to grind some off - that's just the nature of the beast. By the size, I think it would work with a large bowie, maybe something with a collar and oval guard so you can salvage as much of the popcorn as you can.

$70-80.00 would not be out of line. Maybe a hundred.

I ended up grabbing it. The guy is great and said if i get it and it won't work for any reason, he will simply refund and I can ship it back. Suhweet.

Im planning a big 15" OAL bowie for this one...trying to decide now if i want to go O1 with SS guard and fittings, or if I want to do 1095 with a hamon and damascus fittings, or some other combo. With this stag, i don't want it to look too busy, so im thinking of the O1 with SS.

I always thought that the popcorn stag was the ugliest material going. Is there that much demand for it out there?

It makes for some great contrast when the handle is smooth at the guard and then transitions to the popcorn area at the butt of the knife.
I think you'll need an especially interesting blade to offset such a dazzling handle material. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Here is a couple of photos of a Mike Ruth bowie that I got from Les Robertson's website.

Awesome Keith....thats what i'm looking for..im gonna avoid pins if possible and see how it goes....

It has been sitting neglected in a drawer for a long time. A friend sold it to me last month on the condition I use it for myself. What would be best for this, Damascus or plain steel?

Im planning on using plain O1 with SS guard/ferrule/buttcap. With such a busy handle, I dont want the whole knife to look too busy, but thats personal choice. Some like busy knives more than plain ones. Im modeling mine after the bladeforums bowie:

Sweet! Thats the look i'm hoping to get..the dark background with white dots....hmmm....maybe cable damascus might compliment it well due to the pattern....crazy thoughts running through my head....Perhaps I can weld up a nice huge billet at the mini HI at IG's in july....
