So,

A few people have expressed interest in a hammer in.

I don't have a shop, but would be willing to bring a couple hammers!

I live in Forest Grove now. Weekends are good for me, Saturdays usually best.

Anyone want to host? :D

Well, I think since Castle Rock is only about an hour north of Portland via I-5, our new place would qualify.... but we have been completely focused on the house so far, so I don't even know how I'm going to lay the shop out yet. Let alone have it ready anytime soon for a hammer-in. I get up at 5 and drive to the "old shop" to work all day and then drive back home and work on the house. If I was smart I would have figured out where to put the hammers and got the two large cement foundations cut-in and poured already so that they'd be cured out by the time we move the rest of the tools and have a fork-lift on hand.

The nice thing about CR over my hometown of Winlock is that it's just a slightly bigger town, so there are two motels about a mile down the hwy from us, and several restaurants... where as Winlock has zero motels and only ONE restaurant. Much more conducive setting for a hammer-in. ;) :D

Nick , I've seen your yard . I thought we were just going to bring in the trailers , pitch tents and have B.B.Q's . Motels cost money .

I would totally be in, even if i could not hammer any. just watch you old geezers mess it up and yak it up. only problem is that I need a driver, and I don't think any of the parents would be too keen on a 2 hour drive.

This is in our area - Carter Cutlery - I'd be interested in attending, and maybe Murray might, as well.

It would be awesome if there was one in sw Washington. Its a little bit of a drive, but getting to see the way real blade smiths do it would be well worth it.

The offer to come help you move your shop still stands!

Also, anyplace from Castle Rock to Salem/Albany works for me.

TheGeek574... I'd be happy to give you a ride wherever we go. Chuck said he invited you down and I'm going back soon on a Saturday, I just need to figure out when works for Chuck, so if you want I could pick you up heading down.

If you guys PM me your numbers or e-mail I'd be happy to coordinate.

Jack, NO pitching tents around Nick... somebody had to say it....

Well I would be willing to host. My shop is not overly large so a small group would be best. I have lots of room to pitch tents and maybe even a couple of trailers. Plus there are several Motels about 5 miles down the road. I would like to upgrade my entry into the shop and pour a slab so we could work a bit easier. The only problem is I will be busy until at least Sept.

We need to decide what we are going to do and who will be demonstrating. Why don't we hold a work meeting for the organizers. August 13th is the only Sat I have open right now until Sep. Let me know and we'll put something together.

Oh no... NOT PITCHING TENTS!#@!*! :barf: :foot: :p :D

Jack, my yard is big enough, it's just not FLAT enough yet. The dil-rods who lived at the house before got the yard all jacked up. It's going to take about 25 truck loads of fill to smooth/level everything out.

I was hoping to have my first hammer-in during nice weather since some of my buddies from far away would be coming... but I guess Northwesterners would be okay with a winter-ish hammer-in, as they'd all have their webbed feet and gills working at full capacity. :foot: ;)

Guys let me know if anyone puts together a HI with a open invite I would gladly drive the 5-6 hours from eastern WA and just run a broom to be able to watch you guys work :) any shop exposure I am sure would help me greatly.
Chris

Looks Like we have good interest... I'm compiling a list of responders and will put together a group e-mail. I'm a newbie, and willing to earn my stripes helping organize since I have no skills of my own yet.....but be thinking of what we want for demonstrations....and who'd be willing.... It looks like 8-10 people have responded with interest here and in PM's....

What interests you guys? Me.... Forged integral guard, upset integral guard..... Well, I'd learn from ANYTHING really...

Okay,
AC Richards, Chuck, has offered the use of his shop on August 13th for a Mini-Hammer in. His shop is small, so only 4 more people besides myself can be accommodated. :( His place is on the SE end of Salem/Aumsville.
It will be first come first serve. He does have room for tents etc.. Any questions just PM him from his reply/profile in the post above.
Hopefully this fall an awning and poured pad will expand the available space to do a larger hammer in.

Does anyone want to come?? It was a day I was going to set up shop time with him, so if nobody can make it, I'll still go.

Also, any suggestions on a lesson?

Anybody have a larger shop that they want to host in?

Nick, Chuck and I will both come up and help you move. With all that space we could bring, 40-50 people to your shop!

Anybody want to get together in the Portland area some Friday or Saturday night and talk about getting something bigger organized?

Feel free to PM me or E-mail. I have people who already said they want to come to one. Should I take the first 4 from them? Wanna be fair.

Ah! I wish I could go! My family and I will be at a church function at the beach that day... I'm jealous but excited for those of you who get to attend! Better post pics!

Looking forward to this, im just gonna watch and have a big ol' grin on my face! I'll be in touch fluid.

Well man that date is not good for me and some others as I will be at the Montana knife makers show. I would really Like to come but this is very short notice and lot of local guys will be in Montana. Any way for another weekend

Yup. if it's at Chuck's, He's not open till September for an alternate date, but we still have the issue of a small shop and only 5 people plus Chuck if we do it then.
If we have another shop we can do it anytime and maybe have more people? Honestly, there isn't any time it HAS to be. I'm just making suggestions. Any other thoughts on days? Like maybe farther ahead for scheduling?
Also, I'm 6 months into knife making, so, I'm new at this. It already seems like there's not a lot of people that can go. I can plan on that being a day for forging lessons by myself and we can pick another date, possibly place?

If I get my pad poured I will be able to accommodate a few more people. I would be comfortable with 10 now but since it was so short notice I wanted to test the waters with 5. Looks like it might be a bad day for a full on hammer-inn anyway. 2 takers so far so let either myself or Brian know if anyone else wants to come. I am also open for subjects on demo's.
