Possible Civil war era knife from AK?

Thank you. my mother in law is trying to get some info. so I have only her understanding. but this gives me a lead!
 
My guess, from the stamp, is that it's a Mexican bowie! (I know, right?) Age is impossible to determine from the pictures. I'd be leery of paying too much, considering how easy it is to bury a newer piece in the ground for several months, clean it up some, and claim it to be older than it really is. If there is some provenance to go with it, however, you'd be in a much better position to know if your price is right. Any details you could provide might help with an accurate dating of the piece.
 
Oh I am not trying to determine value. I'm a rare book librarian so sometimes I get odd requests for identifying things. I know the best way is always ask people in the know. You guys are great!
 
Ask to have this thread moved over to Bernard Levine's section - that is where the "ID this knife" area is. The guys that haunt that section might have some additional info.
