Posted here as a BOL and a reminder to be cautious.

The following is an excerpt from a notice regarding a possible internet related check fraud scheme. It is posted here in that there seem to be a number of the group that engage in quite a bit of internet sales, some of it via international exchange, etc.

If you do encounter something suspicious do not hesitate to contact the party at the end of the notice.

All the best,

Stuart

Patelco Credit Union has been receiving complaints from non-Patelco victims from around the country who have sold items on eBay, then received counterfeit checks for payment. These counterfeit checks were issued using Patelco’s name and sometimes our actual routing number, but these checks are not valid.

The “buyer” scammer is often from overseas (last example was from Singapore) and they probably used the following website to issue their counterfeit checks. The counterfeits I have seen are identical to the one you will see on this web link:

I'd go as far as to say don't ever accept an e-mail check ever...
Don't send merchandise out without checking a check for validity, unless it's from someone you have done business with in the past, and also trust.
Simply walking into a bank with a check, showing it someone at the bank does not insure validity of the check, whether there are funds, or whether the account holder is even aware the check was issued on their account.
Bank employees may or may not be aware how to check validity of checks, and the banks will charge you for depositing a bogus check, so you're out even more money...
Thanks for the post, Stu.
