I'm applying for the ROTC position in TTU; fortunately, it's good timing and I meet all the requirements pending my board in August. It's not a guarantee as we have to have several options for my application, but my wife is in love with the area (camping, waterfalls, hiking, rock climbing, etc.). Any forumites in the area that can enlighten me on the location?

I love it here. Moved down here from Oneida, TN to attend Tech and have never left. Just about anything to do with nature is real close by with many, many state parks and other natural areas. Also, not probably 8 years ago Cookeville was declared the most livable city in America by USA Today I think.

Thanks Privateer, it really does look like a beautiful place. We're keeping our fingers crossed:D

I hope that all works out for you.

I got my M.S. at TTU and then went on the faculty there... I worked on a grant. After that I was a Campus Minister at a church there in Cookeville for a couple of years.

I have not lived there for about 4 years, but I loved it while I was there. It is a great place to live and I think a great place to raise a family. It is a great outdoorsy area to live and play.

TTU has a nice campus to boot.

Thanks Doc; also thanks gofor3, my wife will like to hear that as my daughter will likely finish high school during my next tour. Keep us in your prayers as this is a big decision for us...and it's a pretty competitive assignment.

Good luck with this rock, I love that area. Rotc job would be a good one huh?:D

Thanks! Yeah, ROTC would be a lot of fun...it would also be a good foot in the door for a job in the university or even a post-retirement junior ROTC job at a high school. It's hard to get the "green" out of your blood:D

Rock,

Can't help you with the area, the closest I ever lived was outside of Hendersonville, NC, but I wish you luck...

ROCK6, best of luck to you and your family! I'll be praying that you get the ROTC position. Will that bring you up close to retirement?

At least you won't be back over here in this lovely "garden spot" again!

Yes it is. Too hard. Bites me frequently:D

ROCK6-good luck from another TN guy (shelbyville) 2hrs SW of Cookeville.

BTW there are over 8,600 caves in TN, if you're into caving at all.

Take care ROCK6 !

I still have another year in lovely Texas, and in the Army, about the only thing predictable is that everyday is unpredictable:D Tennessee is some place we haven't been and my wife use to visit there when she was a little girl. I'm from Washington; wife is from Florida, step-daughter born in North Carolina and my son was born in Texas. Possible retirement in Tennessee seems pretty normal:D

I did forget to mention that according to the TN cave survey there are more caves per square mile in the Upper Cumberland area (Cookeville, Sparta, etc) then anywhere else in the world. Also, seems to be a lot of folks coming to this area to retire.
