Possible Knife Give Away...What do you think?

Great Looking knife, I would have been a proud owner, despite your concerns on the flaws. But I do understand the quest for perfection. I hope you do use the same material, as I love to see what has been done with it.

Ahhh, perfectionism...

That's not a criticism, just an observation. I have nowhere near your level of skill or experience. I'm just glad to see someone else agonize over what the average person (though perhaps not the average custom knife user) would see only if it were pointed out to them, and even when it's pointed out they wonder what's the big deal? I took the knife I'm currently trying to finish to my workplace to have it heat treated. My co-workers couldn't understand my frustration with an uneven grind -- they thought it looked great!

If the flaws look obvious to you, you probably don't want to let it out of your shop with your mark on it, so either rip off the scales and redo it as others have suggested, or give it away without your mark. Yet if you're half as anal as I am you might not want it out there even without your maker's mark...

Good luck. From your photos it looks like a nice piece of work.

Oops... I either missed your post with the decision or you posted it while I was working on my reply. I think you made the right choice whether you give it away or sell it.

Very good looking knife! But you shouldn't let a knife out of your shop unless you are proud of it, and it sounds like you know you can do better.

I give away knives that do not meet my spec to friends and family. I will show them the mistake or blemish and tell them I am still learning. They are usually thrilled to have the knife and after it is used a bit many of the blemishes blend in a little, they get used. I can also tell you that these give away knives help, not hurt marketing. Friends and family will protect your interest and appreciate having what still is an expensive knife that performs very well. Just about every one that I have given away has brought back 2 or 3 new knives for other customers. Just my thoughts, we are human and should strive for excellence not perfection.

just send it to me and i will never let you see it again.
out of sight out of mine.
let me know when you want my address.

I think it's a beautiful knife. It says a lot about you as a maker for pointing out the minor flaws and knowing that you could have done better (we all make mistakes) and not wanting to sell it. Good man. I definately want in on the giveaway!

Alright, the decision's been made. I'm going to pull the scales off, fix the problems, AND do the giveaway. Keep an eye out for it. It'll take me a little time to get it done (I'm short on shop time these days), but I'll post it here when it's ready.

It will still have the holes drilled in the liners into the scales to add strength to the knife. But I'll try and make them as uniform as possible to create a pattern through the scales.

Thanks for all the input!

:D Good decision all around! You'll be much happier with the knife when you've fixed it, regardless whether I catch your "giveaway" thread. ;)
