Possible Mod For RC5?

This is a long shot by far but was just thinking during some down time.

What if the blade was made with a hole towards the front of the blade just big enough for some 550 or a 550 double up. If one were to hammer the blade through a tree and the hole make it out the other side one can tie off rope to it.

Maybe it could be used as a last ditch for a small rope rappell, solid anchor for bear hangs.

Anyone else have any suggestions this could be used for as a anchor or other uses. This may come off as a gimmick but you never know. Someone somewhere could possible use this as a survival need. Again keeping it along the lines of SERE as the knife was designed

That's about the most dangerous sounding mod I've heard of to date!

Not sure how much rapelling you have done but rule # 1 is no knife edge even gets close to the rope. Rope under tension cuts amazingly fast.

Whoever reads this DOES NOT NEED TO EVEN THINK about such a modification for that purpose. You will die if the rope or cord contacts the knife edge. Not to call you an idiot, sir, but this is the most foolish idea I have ever heard when it comes to knives. I don't know how to put it any nicer.

Like I said, more of a last ditch kinda thing, but more so just the ability to use the knife through a tree as a solid anchor for whatever. with the hole coming out of the side of the tree your anchoring to

The military runs off 550 and ductape...i can easily say ive done some really stupid things in my life that i look back on and regret

I understand you were just trying to improvise but if you already have a tree that the knife can be driven through, then you can simply wrap the cord / rope around and use a Figure, Bowline or even a friction wrap to secure one end, and then you're knife is not at the top after you make the rapel down.

No offense taking, I'm just tossing around ideas for the possible use of this forward anchor. Just trying to come up with some ideas or maybe get some suggestions. :foot:

Another concern you would have with a hole through the knife is the edge of the hole wearing/cutting the rope also. Man, knives and ropes are just a scary combination. I've been on enough high-angle stuff to have a LOT of respect for safe rigging.

The only way I'd use this knife as an Anchor:

Speaking of this, Jimmy Dunn and I just turned down a rigging project for a photographer because of safety issues. Was going to be a cool project if we could have done it safely. 5 hot females dressed in hardly no clothes at all to be rapelled off a 40 foot cliff to a ledge below with whitewater around it. All of this for a modeling agency shoot. We backed out when we decided that the modeling agency was more concerned with working to a close schedule instead of working to a schedule that we could have enough riggers to safely perform this task. We wish them the best of luck but if it can't be done right and safe, we're not going to do it. Period.

Okay Okay...just stab me slowly as you shoot holes in my theory, hahaha. Just bored and thought I was being clever. Clearly not cut out for the engineering side of things

Not beating up on you, Brokensj, but we are murdering your idea. One good thing this thread may teach folks is safety, safety, safety when working high-angle stuff.

or safety in general... I can also see the Idea turning into a grapling hook of sorts and gripe because he put out an eye or worse... Darwin in full effect

I think you'd need to add a helmet to this idea since once that knife pulls out of the tree from your full weight on it, it's gonna be coming at you pretty fast.

Other than that, I think it's a great idea. Please send me the youtube link when you try it.

On side diffrent note. Did you guys ever made the RC5 with a hollow handle like the HEST so it would have storage? Or would that void the extra strength that the rc5 is known for?

.....I was thinking more along the lines of pushing blade through tree, insert a rod through hole and you the pummel end as the tie off for whatever. Again this idea could stretch to other things other than rappelling.

Will one of those styrofoam bicycle helmets do? If so, I have one and will get right on trying this idea out!

I think it comes down to the fact that if there is a tree, you can just tie off to the tree instead of using your knife. Good thinking out side of the box? :)
