Hang with me for a second here

I was at the computer last knight and all of a sudden I hear this rumbleing of my wifes Treadmill start up and away she goes. I remember looking for a good used treadmill for my wife until she decided we had to have a new one. I was doing some research on the treadmills prior to the purchase and discovered I could buy a used one for about 100$ to 300$ depending on the machine. Most were 1 to 1.5 horsepower and all were variable speed DC motors. They must be fairly powerful to move a belt that big and a set of legs. I don't know the motor speed or if they are gear reduced but someone looking for cheap variable speed motor and drive may want to look into it for a used one to do the autopsy and adapt to your grinder.
Had to post or my mind will keep wondering.

Thanks for the info.....I have a Question tho, seeing that they are open end motors will the grinding dust kill them very quick??........Bruce

MUST be totally enclosed....and another thing, they must be permanent magnet dc motors....there are two kinds.....the permanent magnet part really likes to pull in all the steel particles....an open frame motor wouldnt last long at all.

I like those tread mill motors. Just put a pair of panty hose on the ends to stop the dust from getting in. I have bought many dc motors off from ebay with controllers.
My take on this in this time frame is to buy all ac spindle controllers from now on. I like to be able to use any junk ac motor I can find to replace a dc..
I found a 3 hp 220 in 3 phase out ac controller for 250.00 on ebay NEW
Its good for life this way.

I just bought 2 2HP variable DC motors from treadmills at a surplus place, they are open framed but I am going to enclose the motors anyway so that wont matter too much to me. They seem to have plenty of power although tourque is low at VERY low RPM's. These motors go from 0-5000 RPM and the part you cant beet is they came with the controls!

So if ya figure out making a variable speed disc sander they end up being very affordable! They just take a little ingenuity to make the open frame bit work!

I figure for the price I paid for them I could go through 10 or so before I even equalled the price of a real 2 HP DC motor and controler! For that price I will certainly give it a try!

I just ordered one of these motors and am going to make a enclosure with a filter on it,Heck the controller is worth more than this if it will work on a different DC motor.Hope it works so I can afford to put one on all my machines........Bruce

Tom I bought mine from Surplus Center in Nebraska there number is 1-800-488-3407. The price was $39.99 I beleive and it took about $10 worth of stuff from radio shack to wire the circuit board to the motor, enclose the circuit board, and provide knobs and switches and such.

The only drawback I have seen with these motors so far is that you have to turn the speed down to 0 when you turn them on then increase the speed, the original purpose shows ya dont want to turn the treadmill on at 40 MPH...

email me if you have any more questions or need the model numbers or wiring paterns or anything..

I was telling a friend about these motors yesterday and he told me he had a treadmill that he would just give me and it is running. So I am going to get it this weekend and remove the motor and controler and give it a try. What did you have to get at Radio Shack Alan,Wasnt the controller that came with the motor set up ok......Bruce

Bruce, yeah everything was set up alright, but the controls were just a loose curcuit board, so you need a box to mount them in, plus you want to be able to mount an on off switch and on on idicator light that arent included, I decided to go with an extra switch to make mine reversable also. so all in all the things at radio shack are just luxuries, you could just screw the board and the rheostat down and plug it in when you wanted to use it but for the extra $10 worth of stuff to hook it up right you cant go wrong.

Thanks Alan.....These all sound like good ideas to me.I wouldnt have thouht about the reversable switch if you hadnt mentioned it....Bruce

Guys.

There is a ton of information on those surplus center motors floating around here and in the artmetal archive. There is a modification (removing a transister) on the circut board to remove that start from zero feature, and another to remove the soft start feature and improve low end torque. Do a search for surplus center in the archives, or email me and I'll try to find it.

I need to know which wires do I hook the reversing switch into on this motor I took out of the tread mill. This one I got only has A 1 hp. motor and a small spindale.I am going to put it on my grinder and see how it works........Bruce

Bruce, what ya need to do is figure out which two wires are the actual power to the motor, once that is figured out it is just a matter to change the polarity with a switch, or set of switches...

I dont know your exact motor offhand or I could offer more help...

Thanks for the help.I went down to the electric motor repair shop and Radio Shack today, and got it all figured out now I have to get a drive wheel made as this motor has a 7/16in. shaft. Then I'm going mount it on my grinder and give it a try.I didnt get the box for the controller from R.S. instead I bought a old cookie tin that was rectangular in shape and deep enough and it only cost $.50 so I now have a controller box with a fishing seen on it,looks cool.Again thanks for the help,Bruce
