possible trademark violation

Yes it is. Been several in past year it seems.
I would send this to Busse... or maybe they will see this thread.

I've seen a couple by local small time makers use a talon hole that hadn't even heard of Busse.
One said someone had requested one, and he made a couple of extras.
But I'm pretty sure the guy in your link knows this is a Busse trademark...maybe not???

I dunno, looks like the holes are. I thought i saw a MOAB once, so i sent the link to someone at busse using their published emails.

I've been a fan of Greco knives for a long time. Some of my first hard use knives were Greco's. This is the first time I've seen his knives with the talon hole, I dont think he would do something like that on purpose.

Agreed. John's been making knives for a long time. I don't know when he first started using the hole, but it's not something he just started doing and he has nothing to gain from purposely copying Busse or anyone else. John isn't some new maker on the block trying to make a name. If you know knives, you know who John Greco is.

i do not think it is a violation .
does busse style patented ?, no !
copy is not good , but put a talon hole on blade like great BUSSE , is not bad !
just a naive thought , do not mind!

and if you know knives ... You know the talon hole is a trademark, or at least you should.

WHat if Jerry named a new model the "Greco" and put Greco at the hilt?

Just saying. IT is what it is.

I am going hunting.

Peace:cool:

if I had the money there would be at least 5 greco models in my collection. such a great knife maker.

There is a difference between a hole in the guard and the busse style of "talon hole". I don't know the specifics of the trademark, but I would assume that it's defined as a circular hole place in the center of a circular guard on the finger side of the knife.

let me say it this way: would you ever in a million years see that style of guard and think "oh man a new busse model!" I wouldn't, because busse doesn't make guards like that.

John Grecco is a great knife maker and an awesome guy! I own one of his knives with the forward lashing point and never even thought about it being a trademark violation. Apples ond oranges...

Honestly, I'd have no idea if not for this forum. That aside though, my guess is that LVC is closer on this. I mean the Gerber LMF has a guard hole, and I could certainly find others in current production, but you don't look at it and think "Busse". May be wrong though.

As far as Greco's use of the hole, his influence there is obviously from Lile. He worked with Lile and in the shop after his passing, and makes no arguments about Lile's influence. Working in the Lile shop, I'm guessing he's been drilling holes in guards for decades now.

I have several knifes that have talon holes that aren't Busses. Should I take pictures of all of them and send them to BUSSE ?

I actually bought a Busse Killer Bee that was marked as a Greco and in a Greco display case at a local Gun Show.

Unless someone posting to this thread owns the rights to the talon hole, than you wouldn't know if permission was granted, nor would you now if the rights owner cares.

Personally I don't think the majority of rights owners or mark holders care whether they are copied, only that the profits from their innovation are properly distributed.

Only the rights owner knows whether this negative attention is warranted. It could have been a simple private phone call to them and the maker in question could be free and clear to use the "hole".

What?? I see lots of knives that have a hole at the end just like that.

Who says Busse invented the hole?

Not at the end dradee, the trademark is for the forward talon hole.

and yes ron m80, Jerry does defend his trademark rights. Without defense a trademark is useless.
