Well, the wife keeps telling me to make a Christmas list and she never knows what to get me. So, I got to thinking and minus some paracord, maybe a new sharp pointy thing, and some other odds and ends...What I really need is a smaller bag than my 3500ci internal frame pack with 2 water bladders to lug around on those trips that are mainly 1-3 days in length.
So, I'm open to suggestions for a somewhat budget concscious bag, capable of carrying the essentials. I was looking at the EOD bag on countycomm.com and I like the price, but I'm not certain it's capable of carrying my goodies, minimalist as they are.

I'm building 72 hours kits for XMASS for my family also, each household will get one, plus a 30 minute audio teaching on preparedness by Doug Ritter.

I have one of those Countycomm EOD bags. It's a great little bag, but it's not really a 3 day bag unless you're a real minimalist. It's about the size of a buckskinner's hunting pouch.

REI has a 25 dollar bag that is basically a stuff sack that is reservoir compatible, with a large internal capacity. If its a 72hr grab and go type bag it might be the one. Also there are a few sites selling surplus German Rucksacks for short money that might fill the bill. I know my folks are getting a 72 hour kit for Christmas from me.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I guess you could call me a minimalist. I do tend to carry more in my head than on my back. Then again, it's November first and the high today will be near 90 here in the desert, so aside from another layer for nighttime, minimal gear here is alot easier.
I really like the looks of some of the Maxpedition stuff, but some if it's a bit pricey. The Fatboy looks like it'd be ideal, but I might be able to get by with the Thermite versipack. I guess I'm still on the hunt :p

Shoulder bags are great possibles kits. I prefer my Eagle Industries butt pack with Tactical Tailor side pocket add ons. If you are planning on making a 72 hour kit for your house or car, a simple duffle bag will do as you probably won't be carrying the gear anywhere, just storing it. A lot of people construct their kits out of regular old items that can let the kit "hide in plain sight". No one will give an old sheet rock bucket a second look but inside, you can have food, water, shelter (tarp), candles etc. Looks a lot less appealing to a thief than an OD bag that might suggest, there's gear in here.

A good recomendation that I can make (that won't break the budget) is the Jansport Odyessy backpack. It holds a little over 2300 cu in / 38L. Has a well padded straps and waistbelt; it also has the ability of accepting a hydration blader. You can find them for anywhere from $75-$99.
I've never dealt with this company but they have it a good price and a nice selection of colours.

Again, I appreciate the suggestions. I'm leaning towards a shoulder bag or buttpack at the moment, since I'll be carrying the gear, in addition to what's in my pockets and on my belt(knives, gun, spare mag, PSK, etc.). One factor I haven't really nailed down though is whether I want it to be hydration bladder compatible or not.
Since my goal is to go more lightweight and pare down my gear I was leaning towards a simple nalgene bottle/canteen configuration.
Anyone happen to know if the "adjustable pockets" on either side of this bag http://www.countycomm.com/BAILOUTBAGGEN5.htm would accept Nalgene bottles? If so that just might fit the bill of what I'm looking for in terms of both price and function/size.

I don't know what you are looking to carry as far as gear goes, but here's one that I and several here have picked up. This one came as a buttpack and others (same bag) are designed as a shoulder bag. I cut the belt off of it and utilized a HD leather and webbed nylon work belt. I carry the pack, the M2 pouch (shown) and a 2 quart USGI shoulder carry canteen.
