I don't know whether to laugh or be p***ed off.
Did Wilson pay for the rights to make this thing?

In D2??? (IMHO one of the crappiest steels for a production blade.)

Check out the PRICE he's asking for it!!!

Ernie, if Bozo Wilson didn't buy the rights, (and I can't believe he did.) PLEASE sue the hell out of this SOB?

He did everything except use a Thumb Disc and call it a Tactical Model 7.

What a pantload.

Ken,

You must have had one of those crappy kabar folders in D2. I had one when they first came out. God awfull things. D2 is really good. If the folks that made the knife know what they are doing. Like say Lile or Dozier. Now ats34 that is the crappiest steel. Ok so maybe it's really 420. But it's next in line.

Regards,

Tom Carey

HEY!!!!

Where's the tanto version?!?!?!
Whoops, i mean, er...

Seriously though, none of ryan wilson's pieces ever spoke to me, but none of seemed to be so closely lifted from someone else's designs either.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Hitachi's ATS-34 or Crucible's 154-CM if it is properly heat treated. Absolutely nothing whatsoever...

I don't really have an opinion on D2 at all, but I know there is nothing wrong with ATS-45 or its' American Counterpart.

Heat Treating is the crucial element in making any steel useful.

I think if I had to pick a favorite steel, it would be BG42. I don't mind ATS-34, 154-CM, A2...quite a few others as well.

Not that you are one of these people Tom, but in the almost four years I have been on this medium, I have seen the same people squeal for steel, then get it, then hate it a year later, then go bonkers over some other new steel.

It gets crazy after awhile.

*damn, I wish I could sleep!*

Slow down Dion!
That's how rumors get started. This site has nothing to do with Ryan Wilson. The individual responsible for this particular rip-off is BILL Wilson. Big time "Custom" gunmaker trying to horn in on the blade trade and doing it in the worst way possible.

If D2 ain't bad enough, Notice the first knife in the list is made of 440c and sells for, well, you won't believe me, go look for yourselves!

Tom, actually, it was a Lile knife that turned me off of D2. I've got a SlyII that I bought direct from Jimmy back in 83, and it's the worst knife I own. (Been looking for someone to unload it on for years, it's a dog.)
I don't doubt that D2 could be done well, but I think it takes a LOT more attention than most makers or manufacturers are willing to give it.

Don,
I've gotta side with you on ATS-34 and 154-CM. I hated it for a long time, talked a lot of trash about it, and then got a Microtech and my Emersons. They convinced me that it's not the steel it's the heat treat, and that's why I'm not going to say that D2 flat out sucks. I'll bet it can be tempered well and make a really good blade, I just haven't gotten one that was. (yet?)

(At least the knife in question doesn't include the "Surf Opening System."

Ken,

Here's what i know for sure, ryan wilson IS bill wilson's son. I saw a magazine article on ryan wilson that i'll try and find once i get home from work. Maybe i'm wrong here, but i was under the impression that ryan did the design work for all the knives bill wilson sells. Like i said, ill try and find that article and i'll post later. Seeing as how i worked from midnight 'til 8 am, sleep is my top priority. Feel free to goad me if you haven't heard anything from me on this topic by the end of the weekend.

The Knifemaker in question is Bill Wilson's Son, I don't recall his first name, but read the same article. It is his Son that makes the blades.

I guess they look at Ernie like John Browning.

(that should piss the bedwetters off)

AHHHHhhhhh!
"Gee Dad, can I be a tactical knife designer?"

Kinda odd, I've met Wilson several times, one of them we sat and talked privately for a couple hours (not braggin' can't stand the guy and don't like his guns either.) and he never mentioned having a son. I don't recall ever hearing from ANYone that he had a son. *scratchin' head*
Oh well, learn something every day.

Did it take a two hour, private conversation to figure out that you don't like him or are you a masochist Ken?

It wasn't an entirely "social" conversation, or I'd have been out of there much sooner. He started losing me at the point where he said "I don't think there's a single guy in the shop that knows how to build a .45 from the frame up." and then it went rapidly downhill from there.

Ken

There is a string from not too long ago called "Interesting Find". I had posted a picture of the Model Five from Ryan Wilson, but the link must have changed.

Absolutely NO offense meant towards the dealer (thier just selling the knife), but look at Knifeart's site under Ryan Wilson. Tell me that's not a Mini CQC7A.

Ohhhh wait, the thumb ramp is missing . . . . never mind.

Ah yes, the steel dilemma.
I have seen ATS-34 that posses the edge holding and durability of tool steel yet still maintain the corrosion resistance of a stainleess steel.
Its all about the heat treating and while many people treat it to an acceptable level I know of only one man who knows how to bring out these qualities in ATS-34.
Also, an acceptable heat treat will yield a moderate level of corrosion resistance but when properly treated, ATS-34 exhibits a better level corrosion resistance than most people realize. It ain't Titanium, but it ain't bad either.

Hey Ken,
The Sly II huh. Is that the knife used in Rambo II or is that one of the varients of the First Blood Knife? When I saw First Blood back in 1983 I fell in love with that knife. Not long after I saw an ad for Lile handmades. I actually got the brochure from Lile back then. I think the knives ranged in price from about $500 to $900! That was about $400 to $800 more than I thought anybody had ever spent on a knife!

Hey guys, give Ryan a break. I see he uses two screws on the pocket, as opposed to Ernie's three. So, I see no reason to think it is not entirely original!
biggrin.gif

Go to knifeoutlet.com and look at his stuff. Nothing really original whatsoever.

Although, from three or four articles I have read, the execution of them all is pretty good.

Right now, I have no opinion.

Hey A_D (still tempted to call you ham drifter!)
biggrin.gif

The Sly II is the one from the original "First Blood" movie.
As a side note, I saw First Blood at the Ft. Bragg Base Theatre when it first came out and the flick lost all credibility when the tortured soul that was Johnny Rambo wailed to his C.O. "I wanna go back to Ft. Bragg!"
biggrin.gif
Pure pandamonium broke out in the theatre and nobody heard a word of the movie for at least 10 minutes!

From a distance, it's a VERY nice knife, however, the temper ain't the greatest, it's harder than petrified woodpecker lips. (engineering term) and I've seen better edge geometry on splitting mauls.

I once talked to Mrs. Lile about changing the edge angle and she looked at me like I was a raving lunatic so I dropped the subject.
The sad part of it is, the Lile shop will still "re-sharpen" any Lile knife you bring them for free. (once a year or there about.)
I've taken it to them to sharpen many times, as the shop is in Russleville, only about an hour and a half from my house, and they've never been able to put an edge on it that comes anywhere near "sharp." Forget hair popping, forget shaving, forget cutting a steak with it. It just won't take an edge.
Guess it was never meant to be used.

Now that I've extolled it's virtues, anyone wanna talk trades?
biggrin.gif

(Now you see why I can't get rid of it!)

Ken,

Yeah the movie was great during the first hour but when he starts on the unintelligable groaning towards the end it goes to sh!t real quick. But the escape scene from the jail into those mountains was a great piece of cinematic suspense.
I guess the Sly series knives were my very first interest in custom knives. I was in the 9th grade at the time so the knife seemed really cool.
I actually have never had a chance to see one of these knives in person. Too bad they have such lousy edge geometry.
I did own one of the Deathwind boot knives made by Jimmy Lile shortly before his death. I ended up trading it for one of the Polkowski custom mini smatchets back around 1994. Man, do I wish that I had either one of those knives now!

I know of one man that does it consistently for a friend of mine and I have a few pieces. Paul Bos.

I think I could do bolsters for that one, or just take them off of an Emerson 7 that I have already done, bet they'd fit!

Kevin

Hey,

Not to beat a dead horse, (BUT HERE COMES MY CLUB ANYWAY). I found the magazine COMBAT KNIVES and it says display until July 5, 1999 for date reference. The article on ryan wilson clearly identifies him as the son of THE bill wilson, pistolsmith. The article is on the tactical model 1, which is the tactical model 1 displayed on bill wilson's website. But hey, now that emerson's no longer making customs, do you think we could get this guy to make some bargain priced cqc6's?
smile.gif

dion

I dunno, but considering that Ryan thinks HIS CQC7 is worth a hundred dollars more than Ernie's, I can't imagine how much he'd want for a custom 6!
rolleyes.gif

Anybody else notice that just about everything else on that site looks a lot like something else?

Maybe we should have a "Name that Knockoff" Contest.
