i was over at the busse section banging out this long post about my knife in the field, clicked on post and was logged out. my post nowhere to be seen.
 
...and it has happened to all of us at some time or another.

On a very long post I try to remind myself to copy the text... *just in case*.

Yeah, always at least copy a long post to your clipboard. There are so many things that can go wrong....

If you got the "not logged in" error message that's a cookie problem -- log out and then log in again making sure to check the "remember me" box. Make sure cookies are enabled; that may require putting Bladeforums in the trusted list for whatever security you're running.
 
I know when I used to run a few VB boards there is an Admin settable automatic timeout feature for inactivity. It comes preset to 15 min. If you were doing a long post you probably ran into this. The system only knows you have been on that page for so long, not that you are typing into it. I found the best way around this for long posts was to do them in word and then copy paste it to the forum.
 
You get timed out after 15 minutes only if you didn't check the "remember me" box when you logged in. If you check that box you don't get automatically logged out at all; you stay logged in until you manually log out (even if it's a year).
