So I was grinding larger knife and made a little slip and well a very small spot burnt. Its far too thin to re heat treat. Could I reshape and grind above the burned spot, it is only about 1/8x1/8 and I could easily re shape it. Would this work or am I just pissing in the wind?

I'm definitely no expert but with my limited knowledge I would assume once you ground beyond the burnt spot you should be good to go.

If it wont drastically change the knife you can grind the edge up past the burned spot. Thats assuming you can safely grind the edge back without overheating more of the edge, or ending up with an edge that is too thick. In that case you would have to thin the bevels again. If you can keep it cool enough through this process, you should be able to save it without too much trouble. Its a case of slow and steady wins the race in this situation.

Before re-shaping the blade, check and see how much damage you did first. If the edge is fairly thin, do a simplified brass rod test. If it is a bit too thick for that, put a very quick and dirty 30° edge on with a 120 grit belt.

Mark an arrow on the blade with a sharpie where the spot is. Place the blade at 45° on a 1/4" brass rod. Press down firmly and pull the blade from ricasso to tip across the rod. Look at the edge and see if it has bent in the overheated spot. If it looks the same, try again on the other side with a bit more pressure. If it passes the test more or less OK, I would go ahead and finish it as is. If it bends too much in the damage area, grind back the blade a bit and re-do the bevels as needed.
