Yesterday I was post HT grinding and burned a small spot on the edge of the blade. This burn was not at the tip. Is this a throw-away or can I re-temper and be OK?
Any spot that got hotter than your tempering temp will not hold an edge as well. If it was a small spot and you're not selling it I wouldn't worry about it. If you want to fix it then reheat treat it or grind up past it. Post a pic.
You would need to heat treat (hardening and tempering both) all over again. Tempering at this point wouldn't have any beneficial effect in regards to saving the spot you overheated on the edge.
I'd advise grinding your thin edge back a bit so that it has some thickness to it before quenching/hardening to avoid getting a rippled edge.
Another option is make the knife smaller. Grinding 1/8" off the edge could be enough to get you into harder steel. Basically grind off the discolored area and resharpen.
Thanks guys! What is the brass rod test? I'll try that and to see if it will skate a file. I really wish I had taken a pic. The color was definitely brown but there may have been some blue in the center.
