Post Office Carry?

Hi, wondering what (if any) knife length is legal to carry concealed into post offices. Tried searching this site to no avail. Thanks for any help.
 
Federal property..."dangerous weapons" in a federal facility constitutes a crime and upto 1 yr in federal prison:
39 CFR 232.1(l)

i carry mine in the post office everytime i go ,. I dont think they would say a 3 inch blade is a weapon :)

Why not? A nail clippers is a weapon according to the airlines. :rolleyes:

That being said, I never remove my knives before I go to the post office. I've even used it while there a few times. :) I've never had anything said to me yet.

So nothing against a 2.5" folder. Where I live, letter of law is officer's discretion to what a dangerous weapon is. Thanks for replies.
 
A 3" folder probably wouldn't cause trouble... last time I was in the states they didn't have metal detectors at the door. But if your a postal worker you can carry whatever the hell you want.
 
Where I live, I ALWAYS carry my full-line of EDC's* into my local Post Office with NO PROBLEMS at-all. In-fact, I even used my Spydie SS PE Delica model to open a package (which contained another knife :D), and the Clerk didn't "bat an eye"...(The package was damaged, so I wanted to inspect it in-front of the Clerk in-case the contents were damaged or missing.).

*My EDC's are:
Spyderco SS SE Police.
Spyderco SS PE Delica.
SOG Deluxe Pocket PowerPlier.
SOG CrossCut.
 
I've used my millie(440v ce) to package something up, as well as open packages in the PO, without them even blinking at it. I've been mailing stuff there for a few years though, so every time I'm in(every couple weeks) we have a good chat. They even helped me get 3 packages out on the truck last time(had to fill xpresspost forms on 3 things in 5min to get on the truck out that night). And still talked for about 15-20 after.

I don't even drop mail off in the box by the house, I go in myself to the PO.

They've even asked to use mine once, b/c they got a courier load in, and didn't know where the last person put the xacto. She knew I had at least the one around my neck(ss pe dragonfly, out in front of shirt flopping around).

I wear mine openly(not even untucking my shirt), they haven't said anything about my carry, or packaging knives up there(walking in, buying a bubble-ope, packing and mailing in one trip... with a loose knife going out, no box).
 
I put in a career with the Postal Service. I can't imagine getting the job done without a knife. Constant use. We even had knives issued, lying around on cut-open tables.

The law is the law. Don't wave a scary knife around and you won't get noticed. Don't cut anyone and they won't throw the extra charge of having carried a dangerous weapon in there.

Of course, you could always support our naturist security campaign: Fly Naked, Buy Naked, Conceal no Weapons Wherever You Flaunt It! :D
 
I carry my military, sere2k, and whatever fixed blade I happen to have on me into the post office every time I go. I have even used them to open packages, cut address labels, cut tape, etc. inside there. Nobody even looks at me weird. That being said, I do not look, act, or dress like somebody looking for trouble. In other words, if you go in there looking like a thug, they will be suspicious of you, and if you pull a knife out to do anything don't be surprized if you are swarmed like flies on sh!t.

They have big signs posted near the door that say "blah, blah, blah, no weapons, blah, blah, blah". I still take my knives in there with me with the knowledge that they are TOOLS and not weapons. I use them to cut things and not to menace or threaten people, and I have never had any problems.

The bottom line is what the workers at the post office are willing to enforce. I mean, if you go in there and take care of your business (shipping things), and don't bother anybody, don't worry about it... but, you have to consider your appearance too. I am not prejudiced AT ALL. I'm serious - not one bit toward anyone at all! I react to every individual person as an individual. But, you have to take into account that not everyone is that impartial. Yes, some people do judge you by how you present yourself. If you appear to be a gang member, thug, slacker, etc., people will notice that. If they already notice you because of your appearance and you flick out a knife, who knows if they will choose to call you on it or not.

Like I said... if you go in there and take care of business like you should in a post office, I don't think you'd have any problems - unless the blade you are packing is illegal in your area anyway, which is a whole other can of worms! (make sure anything you carry is legal in your area!)
 
One major thing to consider also, is the presentation of the knife. Thats one of the reasons I don't bother to cover anything up. If my neck knife is fully visible, and I don't swing it open, but simply grab it out of the sheath(not some big 'hand up and yank like it's 50lbs of pressure holding it'... it rotates out) and open slowly(not in any big rush to scare the bleating class now are we?), then they can care less.

but if I grab my millie from right/front or right/iwb(actually very comfy) and spydie drop it open(draw and open to ready is under 2 sec from hand on wall at shoulder height & knife in pocket or iwb, timed a few times for the hell of it:D ), then hell yes, someone's going to jump back and yell.

personal appearance hasn't got a lot of bearing here in saskatoon. I've met a lot of very nice goth/punk folks, and more than a lot of nicely dressed well off white folks who breakdance. Even the classic "druggie" here doesn't exist. Every walk of life can be seen in that situation(good deal of them native here though). Then you have ppl like me that don't really fit anywhere. I can dress and behave like I'm well enough off, or don't give a &#115hit and look like it. it's all attitude. I was brought up to respect those superior to me(scouts canada 89-97, air cadets 96-02), and treat everyone else as equal unless they carry themselves otherwise.

so what does this all mean, other than I'm wide awake at 0120hrs and been up since 1030hrs?... carry what you want, be civil in how you present and use your knives, and be respectful... and no one bothers you. Act like a mall ninja and draw your 6" tactical spork with black coating fron a horizontal rig under your shirt, into reverse grip and spin it before stirring your coffee... and folks are going to take you to the looney bin after calling security to escort you away.
 
You know how to tell if they're hiring at the Post Office? Flag's at half mast.
 
You could say the same for the Fire Department, the Police Department, and the US Army. Not funny.
 
I salute everyone who makes our postal system run. Stereotyping those hardworking folks is no different than stereotyping knife nuts. :barf:

I can't remember where I ran across it, but I'm pretty sure I found an official length limit of 2-1/2" for Post Offices and other Federal buildings.

I've always carried my Buck 110 into the PO in plain sight and never thought anything about it. Evidently neither did the postal employees. I think one's demeanor makes more difference than one's tools.
