Just thought I'd start a thread for the Craftsman 2x42 belt grinder to show what great things can be done with dedication and without breaking the bank.
 
All of my knives have been made with the 2x42 and can be seen at www.travisknives.com. Here are a couple:

I wish it went slower, but the 2x42 is great for the money.
 
This is ALARMING. Third thread for Craftsman 2x42 in a week. Looks like a hidden promo for me. Or someone is collecting the promo pictures for free.

Easy Travis :D Theres a lot of guys who cant make a knife that looks like that on a $2500 grinder, let alone a $99 grinder :p(LOL, Im probably one of em') Your going to upset the status quo :D:D:D
Seriously though, vert nice :thumbup: I have the same grinder and still use on certain things. Ive made some decent knives on it but not like yours. ;)

Thanks man. I just finished #71, and there are only about 5 of those that look as good as the ones in the pictures. You don't think I'd show off anything but my best do you?
 
Not as nice as those but here's my 2nd attempt done on the Craftsman. You can see one of the belts in the background. :D

Dude I had to really look deep to find something nice to compete with those beauties you posted! At least Johnny and others can see that it is possible to make a knife with the CM 2x42, or in my case a knife shaped object. Hehehe...

Mossanimal that thing is wicked!!
 
This was the last knife I completed on my 2x42. I have a few more at various stages (a few from HT, one cut out and profiled). At the moment though that pesky thing called life has been getting in the way. I have a question though for you guys turning out these beauties. How much finishing work are you doing on the 2x42? I find basically anything above 220 gives me too much belt bumping. And from there go to hand finishing, which is also what takes me a ton of time. Travis, that first one is freakin sweet!!

Fletch, I usually only went up to 600 grit with the trizac belts. Those don't have much bumping. Then started hand sanding at 320 up to 800 for a satin finish. It took a long time.
 
Most of these knives were made with the Sears 2X42 belt grinder. The grinder is not perfect, nor are my knives, nor would they be if I had a $2,000+ belt grinder. I can't imagine going back to using just files. I doubt that I would make knives.

Lovely work guys !!!! I believe a lot has to do with gettig by with what you have . A machine can certainly be a big part of advancing ones work but knowing fully how to use what you have can get some super results. Frank
 
Hey guys, these are great knives. I am in the uber-beginning stages and I get excited when I see what can be done. Thanks for posting photos. It gives me ideas and goals to target.
Travis, I agree with others, the first knife is awesome!
