My Father fought through the entire Aleutians Campaign (June 2, 1942 - Sept 10, 1043) with a Kabar combat knife. I should state that he kept it "meat butcher" sharp. He was in charge of the kitchens and they never knew when one of the guys on the base would hit a walrus or seal (non-navy, they were called UDT then) or some other varmint that would need to be dressed right away, and a good sharp knife was not always around. He was then transferred to 3rd Army with Patton heading for the Bulge. Got sick, spoke fluent German, ended up in Kansas helping to interrogate German POW's.
