I didn't see an official test forum, so I am trying some posts with extensive quotes to see if the posting issue is any worse. RUmor was lots of tags were an issue.

Hey fellow sufferer :D.....

This is also a Trial - instead of using the default the QUOTE=Carl64 - I changed it to what I think Carl64 used ie: just the QUOTE /QUOTE tags.

I did a Preview and it worked just as Carl said as FAST as anything.....

EDIT - I am going to try the DEFUALT form of "QUOTE=username" in my next post to see if it works and whether I have isolated the problems for me, at least......

The QUOTE=username form in this case "QUOTE=Carl64" - seems to work under limited circumstances for me - it seems to Preview once (or twice) fine, than will Lock-up IE on Submit.

Or will Submit fine (without any Previews) - but then will more than likely lock-up IE on any attempt to Edit the post.

If this is successful I will immediately return and Edit this post -
if you do NOT see an edit it means I have failed and IE was Locked-Up......

Just to be explicit - I attempted to Edit the above post as I promised TWICE - both times Failed with IE lock-up - even though I did a simple Save Changes withOUT any Preview

Preview worked on this post Multiple times as fast as anything -
so hopefully Submit Post will work too?

EDIT #1 - yes, it worked too as fast as anything - so here's the 1st Edit on which the Preview worked fine too.

EDIT #2 - just to show that multiple edits do not have problems either. Multiple Previews also worked fine on this second Edit.... so Save Changes or Submit should work fine for this second edit too.

EDIT #3, #4 even #5 (to correct typos) - worked too.

In summary - it would appear - at least for me -

I just tried all sorts of edits and previews, and I can't get it to happen now.

I had it lock up on my previous post. The post finally went through but it took a while.

Friends don't let friends use Internet Explorer. It's 4.7 megs, not a huge download. It's not currently affected by spyware or viruses. It renders web pages significantly faster than IE. Tabbed browsing, better cookie controls, RSS feeds, more secure password manager, tons of free add-ons...
I do realize you're trying to be helpful.

BUT the fact of the matter is that BladeForums is posing some difficulties for some users who ARE using IE6 -
this is a PROBLEM for Blade Forums - and pretty serious -
since the majority of the internet population does use IE -
whether we like it or NOT.

I have some very good reasons for being on IE6 - without which would render some of my use the the internet inoperable -
yes, I have installed and used FireFox - but unfortunately it is not compatible with an essential component I use for the net.....and the only Browser that is compatible was IE6.

Yeah, I know it isn't a perfect, simple answer for that reason.

It's a decent temporary workaround for some, though.

The unfortunate situation is that some people find websites or plugins they need to use that won't work with Firefox. This is rapidly changing however.

As a side note, there may be some problems with the vBulletin code. However, nothing should cause a web browser to freeze. It could be used as a denial-of-service attack. So Microsoft needs to fix something as well.

Like many I do realize that MicroSoft code is far from perfect.

But unfortunatley it is the de-facto standard - even if we don't like it.

Unless there is a very good reason, why do we/BFC have to take it upon ourselves to buck the system, and cause "innocent" BFC members problems?

I mean BladeForums was working just FINE for me for YEARS before the recent update/upgrade -
it is ONLY since the update that the browser lock-up problems have occured. All my internet software is pretty standard and I am not trying to do anything "fancy" -

So is it REALLY MY responsiblity to go tell MicroSoft to change/correct IE6 so I can surf BladeForums without lock-up problems - like before? when I haven't a clue to what exactly is wrong with it, and it ONLY happens on BladeForums since the update (and NO other website that I frequent)?

I have been trying to post in W&C twice now and it hangs up my IE6. Never happened before - what gives?

This is not restricted to any particular section/forum.

I have had IE6 lock-up on me on three attempts to post a reply - simply by keeping the standard default QUOTE=username tag.

I have found that using the QUOTE=username tag seems to cause me problems, especially using multiple Previews or Editting muliple times.

WithOUT the QUOTE tag I seem to be able to do multiple Previews, Post, and Edit multiple times fine and fast.

I thought it might have been having a tag right at the start of the post that cause me problems with locking-up IE6 - but some of my attempts to reply to the post with something typed before the QUOTE=username tag locked-up my IE6.

There are two other threads in this forum that relate to this problem -

Preview and Submit Post Locks up
or
IE locks up BAD when posting!

EDIT #1 & #2 - with multiple Previews - to show that without the QUOTE tag everything is normal and fast.....

I believe this issue has been reported on other forums running vBulletin. No, it's not your responsibility. I think that if someone here (Spark?) happens to discover precisely what is causing the issue, it should be reported to Microsoft because we shouldn't have browsers locking up.

EDIT: testing

I just tried replying to my original message 3 times, each with the full thing quoted as it was, and it locked up every time. Previously I was unable to get it to happen twice in a row. There is no method to this madness.

I don't know about Microsoft; but, I suspect the problem has something to do with font sets. I have had post windows displaying unfamiliar fonts and other post windows displaying no fonts at all. I have also had it freeze solid when doing a post preview, even though posting w/o the preview seems to work.

Ok, a bunch of fonts have been removed out of the CSS in an effort to slim it down. We'll see if that works.

Trial posting with QUOTE=user tag - with multiple Previews
Preview #1, #2, #3

Preview seems to work fine -
hmmmmm............ seemed to have a bit of a delay like the browser was about to lock up on the last Preview #4 & #5 ....... but they eventually worked.

Will return to do Multiple Edits if this posting is successful.
