Post Up Your NEW Gear ...

splurged, going on a snowshoeing trip this weekend w/ the "boss", so I had better make it as comfortable as possible :D

Mtwarden - you're going to like the xtherm. I bought one a few months back and it's fantastic. 90% of my camping [summer and winter] is on snow and my Neoair wasn't cutting it. My EXPED is too heavy. The Xtherm is perfect, nothing comes close in terms of R-value/weight. Enjoy, it's a warm pad and I've actually started carrying a lighter sleeping bag.

I've always inflated my Therm-a-rests by mouth, but I've started inflating my NeoAirs with the Xtherm pump bag just to reduce the amount of moisture and bacteria that could accumulate inside. It's actually a pretty decent little pump bag once you get the hang of it. I can inflate the Xtherm in about 5 bags full.

That does look intrigueing and might work for me. As it is, I have to take breaks while inflating. I can still do it, but it takes quite a while.

I'm out backpacking this weekend, but I'll look around for it next week. I think it's in my camping box...

good to hear, looking forward to trying them out :) I'll have to practice w/ the bag/inflator when I get back, it'll be the old fashion way this trip :D

No rush at all. It will likely be a few weeks before I will have the opportunity to get out again. I am doubtful that one "huff" will inflate the inflator bag, but I can easily whip it through the air the way I inflate garbage bags. And I certainly can no longer sleep on the ground or on my blue pads anymore. The BA pad has been a Godsend. I am a side sleeper and the shoulders and hips feel rocks and twigs much more than they used to. Enjoy your outing.

I never could get the one-puff thing to work (I think you need a good bit of wind at your back), and in the end, I was just too impatient to fiddle with it. It was also one more thing that would add to my base weight as I'm striving to simplify and reduce.

I think it takes more fiddling than I was willing to put in to get it to work right (this was with an BA Insulated Air Core as well), but if you're willing to give it a try, you might as well, as the concept is great. I would replace the stock plastic tubing adapter they provide with a more flexible/supple tube. The stock one is too rigid for ease of use. If I can find some soft tubing at work that'll fit, I'll send you a piece of that as well, assuming I can find the instaflator at all...

Since I let the water carry my load in a 16' canoe, adding a few ounces of weight is not much of a concern for me. Particularly when the added weight helps to to continue going out there when I really should not. If it works, fine. If not, I'll keep looking. Heck, they don't cost much at all from my searches. So no worries if you can't find it.

Picked up some new Day Hiking gear. Stratos 24 and a 3L Hydraulics.

And some stuff to go in the pack:

Yeah, I figured that'd be the case for you  And it doesn't sound like you plan to portage much these days. I think the same concept inflator by Alpacka Raft might be a better, more robust option for you in that case, since its made in silnylon. The instaflator is on the flimsy side. Click. You'd need to get your own tubing adapter for that guy.

Right on! :D I'm doing my first trip with the Ohm 2.0 this weekend, looking forward to it. I think the Catalyst is a solid pack, I hope it works well for you  Let us know how it goes!

Lol. Thanks Hikingmano =) I ordered it last night and have already received a shipping tracking number! Thats much faster than I anticipated.

That "por-tage" thing isn't to popular here South of the Mason Dixon, even among the younger more fit crowd. In fact, when I use an outfitter for shuttle, they load my canoe on and off their trailer and take my canoe and gear down the embankment to the launch for me. I can do it myself, but it is a long process with a lot of "breathers".

I'll try the cheap and easy route with the inflator and see if it works. If not, a Coleman batttery op inflator may be the ticket. Blowing up the pad is nothing compared to inflating the fore and aft air floatation bags in my canoe. I don't always use them, but in the interest of safety, I really should. The Alpacka bag is interesting too. So many choices!

Been wanting a pair for a couple of years, and finally broke down Tuesday, after finding them in a gear store in Monteagle, TN.
Nowhere I've checked in person ever has the Medium in stock, and the fingers of the Large are too long. Haven't liked any of the fingerless models, either.
Not a perfect fit, but better than anything else I've tried.
They are pretty cool:)
