Actually Ethan is quite an accomplished cook in his own right and has made substantial contributions to the Joy Of Cooking. He learned to cook watching his mother Marion work on Joy Of Cooking. He was often the taste tester of mothers creations. He began helping his mother with Joy Of Cooking in the early 1960’s. While he gained extensive cooking experience at home. He also studied at the prestigious Cordon Bleu in Paris (1971) and throughout in Europe. He combines his knowledge of classical continental cuisine with his roots in traditional American cooking. His mother handed over authorship of Joy Of Cooking to Ethan in 1976 and he has put his own mark on it while honoring his mothers original foundation.First post here. Howdy!
Camillus/Becker BK-4 Machax autographed by Ethan Becker himself. I wanted one of these when they were made in Cincinnati, but couldn't afford it. Years later, I finally bought the Camillus version just to have one, but never used it. A company I worked for had Mr. Becker in a few times to discuss menu expansion for military rations and I had him sign the knife and sheath. Oddly enough, his grandmother wrote the famous book "The Joy of Cooking" and I think he's made WAY more money from that than anything else he's dabbled in.

A modern day Renaissance man. Unlike you I have never had the privilege of meeting him in person. He is reputed to be a real gentleman who takes a great deal of personal pride in every single one of the products that bears his name. I have seen him have a customer send a knife they had an issue with that he personally took to Ka Bar to have the problem resolved and dig into his personal collection to replace a 20 year old out of production Becker Brute (if he could find a spare) that the owner admitted having abused. Kind of cool knowing that your knife comes from a great guy
I did a mock up once, as I was contemplating grinding my 16, and making new scales for it. Here's the before and after:I was polishing the back spine on the 15 and was contemplating a good way to grind the lower rear part. The biggest problem would be the handle...or making new ones.
