very well. especially the older (and hopefully newer models which will be based on the old style, the Camillus models has poor grinds imho)

they are not super heavy chopper/loppers, but they do bite. a similarly sized Bonecutter khukri will be twice the weight, and will out perform in raw chopping, however, the Machax has a better overall heattreat imho and can be used for a lot of things.

they can baton pretty darn well too. feather sticks to making traps.

Please forgive my rusty pic attempts, it's been a few years. With any luck, clicking onto the pic should expand it. I was skeptical of the handle cut out changes initialy, but with use and more information, I see why the changes are positive. I really love the little BK-2 now and have some Micarta on the way for it.:thumbup:

My tools come and go, and this is what's left now. I do have some goodies arriving in a bit though and still want a Mag Camp...a lot. The old buck got his rack caught and couldn't get out. When seen from all angles you can see why he couldn't find release. A pure fluke and possibly a once in a lifetime find with this scenario. The coyotes seemed to enjoy him though. I had the retaining snap\strap removed on the BK-2 sheath and replaced with a wide double snaper. It was only 15 bucks for the work at a shoe repair shop and I had it set up for pull to the front unsnaping. If anyone keeps his original retainer, remember to keep the tag end facing your butt so that the brush wont catch it and snap it open on you.

I don't know if I'd get jealous over a Brute other than the novelty of a discontinued knife. Apparently the BK-9 is supposed to be a better chopper. Oh well, I still like the old beasty and it still whacks the trees down for me. I was curious the other day as to how the Brute would fair against a light tomahawk. So I took my lighter hawk, a Cold Steel New Frontier and the beast out for some bush whacking. I chopped identical pieces of dry and wet wood with both and I give a slight edge to the hawk, only because it was quicker and took a tiny deeper bite. Both tools had a fair working edge on them before I took them out. The hawk could also hack out thicker chunks off a stump, which also meant speed. The Brute could be batoned through deep tougher wood, but as was said, was a bit slower. The hawk also had an edge in fatigue reduction likely helped by the quicker lever action removal by its long handle. Why do I care about speed? It's my climate\location here in the north. I basically view it like this now. Warmer weather (minimal chance of hypothermia) = the brute or a hawk and smaller knife. Late fall or winter = a smaller (BK-2ish) blade and an AXE. I cannot compromise with the lighter\slower cutting tools in cold weather. Is the Brute still useful to me ? Hell ya !, all summer long if I wish. And it's great fun to lob those ever green boughs off lickety split. But when fall comes, I have to change tools.
