I am just on Chat right now and we were talking about how great knife bastids are. So, I was finally motivated to post this thread. Please post your awesome forumite/Bladeforums expereinces here so we can all see how great a COMMUNITY this is.

I live in a small city in Southern Alberta. A place that isn't very big on knives, there are no knive shows nearby, the library has one knife annual ('99), and so on. After telling people that I really need to find a place where I can talk to people about knives (the people I talked to about knvies areund here were imaginary, as you don't really talk about knives here), I found Bladeforums! I don't know how I found the forums, but I did, and I'm glad. In no particular order and this lost is by no means complete, I offer to you forumites my great experiences:

On the forums I have won a Bobby Branton pro thrower model #12 and a hat from SOG. I won the B. Branton thrower answering a contest question about how to best get the word out on knife throwing. As it turns out, I had never really thrown a knife and now I do on occasion, thanks to Bobby Branton. SOG had a great contest where we had to write poems/songs and the prize was a SOG SCUBA/DEMO knife, some $250 value. I came in second I think, and all participants got a SOG hat!

Richard has done some pic work for me with pics of 2 knives I made. Others, including Vampire Gerbil (Oh how I miss his leg humpings in Chat.... not that he ever humped my leg! Well, he did but I didn't enjoy it, HONEST!) helped me format pics and such. Phil is responsible for creating my awesome Avatar pic, combining a pic of my latest knife with a box of crayons! Get it? Crayola, crayons, colorful knife? :)

Other bastids have sent me free stuff. samhell sent me some g-10 and MadDog 2020 sent me a CRKT Neck Peck! Pretty darned cool. L6Steel spoiled me rotten. He gives away more stuff than Santa Claus, really. He has told me lots of knife making tips for one, but then he sent me a care package one day. It included some D2, some 15 or so knife patterns cut from thick plastic, a couple of sheaths, and 4 knives he ground out. 2 of them are fighters I have to finish cleaning up. He got them ready for me because I need to learn how to solder a guard. So, L6 Steel decided to make me some knives and prepare some guards. All I do is the clean-up work, solder, and put on handles. But that isn't all! Mike sent me a crap load of stencil stuff for my etcher, and he sent me a drum sanding kit! And he sent me a filing gizmo for filing square shoulders so that guards seat properly. Mike sent me 2 finished knives that have some cosmetic flaws and he sent me some brown and emerald green dymondwood to play with. There is more in the care package, but I must press on.

I won some Blackhawk gear from Javahead, well, his wife really. Javahead put up a pic of his SF team and said guess which one is me! I ended up guessing corectly (I though with a name liek Javahead he must be a nerd, and sure enough there was one guy in the crowd with Terminator glasses! Then again, he is a tough as nails bastid, so I should watch what I say!) So, Javahead and his wife sent me a keyring, a shavekit bag and a wallet. WOW! Was I ever happy. Still am.

GusK has lent me a couple of books that were awesome. I even had one for WAY longer than I should have, but Gus was patient with me. Thanks a bunch again Gus! Little Lethbridge doesn't have a lot in the way of books, so getting books leant to me, like the Hughes book and a book on Randalls was great. Lifter4Him also sent me a Thorpe book on Bowies and told me to keep it! Thanks Lifter. Phil sent me the old Jim Bowie movie "the Iron Mistress" to watch. I never would have seen that movie if it weren't for Phil. I sent Normark a sheath video I have to watch and he sent it back with a gold leaf pendant he made to gove to my girlfriend. That went over very well!

I have had the great fortune to talk to or get advice from some of the famous knife bastids here. Kit Carson, Darrel Ralph, Tim Herman, Ethan Becker, Paul Bos (ncie dude to talk to the phone on), Wayne Goddard, Trace Rinaldi, Jerry Hossom, Tom Mayo, Matt Lamey, Neil Blackwood, Phil Wilson, Chuck Bybee, Joe Talmadge, Bruce Evans, John at SOE Gear, and the list goes on. All of these guys you can e-mail just to chat about knife stuff and they are happy to respond, as they are knife nuts too.

Chuck Bybee e-mailed me out of the blue once and told me my knives are too good for dymondwood, so he cut me a great deal on some green g-10. I used the g-10 on my latest knife (see avatar) and after seeing a pic of the knife in progress he sent me a block of stabilized spalted maple burl! Louis (The Martial Way) is sending me some Plasti-dip and a knife from his collection to measure and such. We are working together on a knfie idea that looks to be a lot of fun.

I also must mention two other influences. Les and Carol Allen are some great folks that live near me. Les told me at a gun show one year that if I ever wanted to come to his shop, I could. the next year at the gun show I sayd, "remember me and your offer?" He did and we met once in town here and set up a time for me to go visit. We did a lot of knife making that day and I will never forget it. My first knife shop visit. I even got a farmer's breakfast! Wow, that ws a lot of bacon...

Secondly, I must thank Master Robert, known here as R. Dockrell. This guy e-mailed me (or did he call me?) one day and said that he's coming to my city for a few visites over the coming months and asked if I wanted to meet. We did and we've been chatting ever sense. He gives me a hard time a lot and slips in a tip now and again! Robert ordered me some belts even though I can't pay him back for a few weeks. And, I get to go visit him and his wife and play in his shop!

I also must thank the Chat bastids, with whom I've had hours of entertainment, shop tips, sex tips, travel tips, knife chats, and so on. And thanks to the zillion other members for posting questions, and answering mine. And thanks to Mike and Spark for creating Bladeforums, withouth which it is unlikely any of this would have come to be.

Now forumites, post your experiences here!

Snif, This is going to take me a couple of days and I am not sure where to start.

all the swapping that you and i have done is one of em. enjoy doing buisness with you a lot, buddy.

another would be my first custom.
i won it from L6STEEL aka mike cooper in one of his raffles, and love it.

and the most significant would be going to blade show. without this site i would have never gone. i will be back next year, too :D
even if you got rid of all the knives ('cept for all the randalls for puffy :p) it would still be a great time.

chat is good, shooting the **** will all the bastids...great way to piss away an evening :D

Well Cray, I dont know where to start...there have been so many good things.

Lets see, I won a knife (CRKT KFF) from Mike and Spark for answering one simple little question. Mike Cooper (L6Steel) is one of the most generous people around here. I always enjoy his knives. Just chatting with him is always a pleasure.

Of course there is PhilL...I would not be taking the photos I am today if Phil had not helped me as much as he has. Never complains or acts put out....I asked, and he answered and always had good advice.

Brett Bennett (Kaos). I mentioned that I wanted to get into film photography (I do digital). Brett said he had an old camera that I could have...he did not want payment or anything. It arrived, and not only was there a Canon 35mm, but also 2 flashes and 4 lenses!!! :)

MaxTheKnife, Ray Kirk (raker), Jeremy Reynolds and others I have met are some wonderful people. I actually hung out with Jeremy at a gunshow, great guy and well worth going just to meet him and talk with him.

Maddog2020 has made a few kydex sheaths for me....outstanding stuff, and an incredibly nice guy.

All the chat crowd, Crayola, Kit Carson, GusK, Tim Herman, Yoda, Balilover, Maurice and so many more make for a fun evening with friends.

Way to many good people here to list them all (I would be here all night trying). Who could ask for more?

A couple of years ago, I was browsing through one of my Blade magazines, and came across an ad for "Chai Cutlery" and decided to check out the website. James K. Mattis! What a site! It was encyclopedic, it was fun, and at the bottom of one of the pages, it had a note about him being a moderator on something called Bladeforums ... Hey! Here I am!

Last year, Roger, at Bayou Lafourche, celebrated opening a new store by giving away a bunch of knives. I won first prize! Yeah, I chose the Sebenza :D

One day I was reading a post from this guy, remster135, and I noticed he lived in "Pompton Plains" so I e-mailed him, I mean, that's where I live! a few blocks away. I lived in NYC most of my life and never went to a knife show. Now I've been to the last three in NY. It is really great, meeting so many knife knuts, and getting to wave my knives around without anybody panicking!

Awesome stories guys. Forumites, lets keep this one going and show everyone what a great community this is!

I have 2 things to add myself, and both deal with Maurice!

Mo got me into trading, and I love it. I have been able to handle different knives that I never would have been able to play with otherwise. Trades with guys like Mo and recondoc are fun and rewarding.

Secondly, I actually REMEMBER things like Mo's first knife show! I actually know a lot about several forumites here. I mean, Tim Flannagan had a son recently and I haven't seen him around on the forums for a while! I bet it is because of that little tike of his. I also know what kinds of blades Reiki would take in a heart beat, and I've seen pics of Walt's daughter. Vampire Gerbil's daughters too :) My point is, I have shared in other people's fortune's (like Mo's) and grief's (like the passing of James Mattis). If that ain't community, I don't know what is. ;)

Shucks, this is easy. Because of Bladeforums, a bunch of us got together and started going to gun/knife and knife shows as a group. This loose assortment of n'eer-do-wells and scoundrels evolved into the North Carolina Knife Knuts. No finer group of friends has ever graced the planet. Until I moved to Minnesota, we all lived within a 2-3 hour radius of each other so we were able to get together frequently. They have become, and still are, my best friends. We have supported each other in times of great personal turmoil and have shared many triumphs as well. Each has shown execeptional honor and commitment to our range of friendships. We are lucky to have such a group of people who love the same avocation, and we know it.The forums have introduced me to dozens of wonderful people all over the world, people I would have never otherwise met. But the NC Knife Knuts have been the icing on the cake. Here's to Dexter Ewing, Kelly Yates(Senator on Bladeforums), Chris and Denna Raymond (CPR) Michael Mclaurin(NCBlades)Mike and Amy Yates (DeadinNC), Terrill Hoffman and Mark +Denice Kukelkorn (MarkK).When they meet in Winston/Salem for the show this weekend, I will be with them in spirit. And Chris will be late;)

Damn, I'm homesick!

I've seen my name mentioned a couple of times here and I have to tell you, there's no way I can make up for the kindness, friendship, laughs and generousity that has been my experience from being a part of BFC and BFC Chat. In fact I started a thread not too long ago to tell you folks what I think of you all...well not all, but most...well not most, but some...well, let's just say all of you that have sent me a Free Knife just for showing up. :D

Damn, I'm homesick!

You'll be missed on Saturday, David. Especially by me as I'm wanering lost around Winston-Salem looking for the gun show... ;) (For those who don't know, I'm somewhat, ahem, directionally challenged.) LOL It won't be the same without you. And yes, Chris will certainly be late! Some things never change. :D

I posted the following a few weeks back in PhilL's "Have I told you lately that I love you" thread. It sums up my feelings well.

I always hesitate to make a list like this as I invariably leave off someone that belongs. Be that as it may...

Here's a few things that I'm thankful for. All of these things resulted from my participation on the forums.

  • Getting to know Dexter Ewing, David Baker (davidb415), Mark and Denise Kukelkorn (MarkK), Chris and Denna Raymond (CPR), Mike McLaurin (NCblades), Terrill Hoffman, Alan and Mary Folts, Tommy Matthews (Otha), Mark Hazen, Gary Graley, and the other members of the NC Knife Knuts gang...
  • Spending countless hours in the shop and home of GenO and Cindy Denning. There aren't two finer people around. If I ever turn out to be a decent knifemaker, it will be because of GenO's constant prodding and patient instruction.
  • Having a maker the caliber of Darrel Ralph insist that I fly up to his Ohio home to spend four days helping to make my own double-action EDC folder. Arguing, ahem, discussing social issues with Darrel's wife, Sharon. ;) Beating the crap out of Darrel's son, Ian, after he bounced a beachball off of my head one time too many. Oops, did I say that out loud? :o Conspiring with Dexter to drive Bruno (Darrel's huge Doberman) bonkers with a few flashlights. :D
  • Getting to know Dexter and his family when they put me up for the Southeastern Custom Knife Show weekend. Super folks!
  • Picking up my very first custom knife in person from Kit Carson at the '98 Blade Show - a medium Model 4 with a Talonite drop point blade. After chatting and e-mailing for so long, finally meeting him was a real treat.
  • Barry and Phillip Jones. Two fine makers who would do anything they could for you.
  • Steve Freund (and his various alter egos - Calvin Cooledge, Tim Buck II, etc...), owner of Tomway display cases. He might just be the most genuine knife knut I know. He's surely the funniest! And B*b Harshall, Steve's friend. Great guy with an even better knife collection. Or is that the other way around???
  • Tommy McNabb, the NC Custom Knifemakers Guild, and all of the knifemakers' wives who make everything run so smoothly! Without a doubt, it's the best state guild in the country. From the quarterly meetings/hammer-ins to the annual SECKS show, a class organization all the way around.
  • Hearing Les Robertson's stories in person. Sure, he's got that gruff no-BS personality, but the stories he tells are priceless.
  • Getting to know some forumites through e-mails, and occasionally meeting them in person - Phil, Para, TimmyF, Hoss, Jeff, Herb, Billy Mac, dogman, Gene, Kodiak, Paul, Randy, Win, Elliott, Dave, et al...
  • Audra Draper. 'Nuff said. :D
  • The Blade Show. For being within driving distance from my home.
  • Bubba's BBQ. For putting up with the NC Knife Knuts bi-monthly knife shows. The food ain't too bad either.
  • Meeting James and Toni Mattis at the Blade Show. Two folks that God made for each other. We miss you James.

Wow,....this will be an endless topic.

My absolute best experience here on BF? Gaining the friendship of one of my favorite people in the entire world; Larry Brahms of www.bladeart.com . Larry and Vince are just too good for words.

And then there's my extended family; The Usual Suspects. The times we've spent in Suspect Chat together,...the great phone calls with my Suspect friends John, Don, Ed, and Oliver.....The excellently smooooooth deals I've had with Bob, Seth, Chris, Ed,.....Suspects are outstanding people. I can't mention them all here, but I consider all of them to be true permanent friends.

Thanks, Spark, for giving us the means to acquire such meaningful relationships here. Thanks so much. :)

Excellent topic, Crayola. Thanks for posting it. :)

Thanks for the very kind words, David and Kelly. I do owe it a lot to BF for hooking me up with all my NC forumite friends. They are a damn fine bunch of guys (and gals) to be around. David has pretty much summed it up by saying that we've supported each other through the bad times and rejoiced in the good times. I feel like those guys are my extended family.

I've also been able to make good friends with guys like Jason Burns, Gene Sederholm (Gene), and Keith Morgan (nosamk). I try to stay in touch with these fols on a daily basis...and sometimes exerting my "bad influence" on folks...right, Keith? :D

Through BF I have also been able to meet and come to know a lot of the makers that frequent this place - Kit Carson, Darrel Ralph, Rob Simonich, Barry and Phillip Jones, Jerry Hossom, and Tom Mayo (yes, I'll even admit to that :D ). Many of whom have become friends of mine and who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help me out on articles by supplying information and/or samples for photos. I've even had the pleasure of being welcomed into the homes and shops of Darrel Ralph and Kit Carson. I am greatful to both for broadening my knowledge about the technical aspect of custom knifemaking.

And it's always a blast come Blade Show time in which you get to meet folks in the flesh whom you've come to know on-line. Half of the fun in knives for me is the people involved with knives. The knife industry is a very tight knit community and BF helps to foster the idea of community and to bring new "family members" into the fray. Sure, we may have our spats but like any other family, we kiss and make up (though, not literally and certainly NOT with VG around :p :D )

I'm new. :p :o :D

and yeah, my new famous quote to the spousal unit is "Dexter talked me into buying it"

My must memorable moment on BladeForums was winning
the Mr. Mojo contest on the Busse Forum. It cost me
a couple nights of sleep, but it was worth it. The Busse
Forum is what brought me to BladeForums. I always wanted
a Busse Badger Attack. I could never bring myself to spend
$200 for a knife. Well I finally broke down and bought the
Badger Attack.
BladeForums has DRUG me into another hobby, now. Now I own
a few of Jerry's knives, plus a few more from other makers.
I think it is cool to correspond with all the Big names
in the knife industry and the up and comers. And I think I've
made a couple friends along the way.

The fun, info and just plain entertainment have been great in the last year, but if I had to name my one ultimate moment, it no doubt was winning the contest last spring ("Buy a Camillus EDC and enter to win a custom Darrel Ralph EDC). I entered and won the custom DDR EDC.

Seeing my name announced late one Fri. night nearly floored me. The knife was even better, as well as meeting Darrel at the recent NY Custom Knife Show.
I guess you could say I'm a happy camper.:D :D

I have a number of great experiences, but to list them in no particular order.

Meeting Nemo, who thanks to him, got me interested in Chris Reeve knives! Heck, he even sent me his personal large sebenza to play with for a coiple of months. I am now a convert to the cause! I now own two of them...

Which leads me to jki who thanks to his help and the great people at Arizona Custom and the staff at Chris Reeve got me my Small wood Damascus in record time! After so many disapointments and false starts, I got my perfect EDC! Well once I get my G2 sheath for it!

Meeting Doug Mondt, who I then ordered my first and not to be last custom knife from!

Meeting Mike Payne, a genuine gentleman!

Meeting Edmoses, who was able to let my buy the first knife I ever saw that made me a KnifeKnut a Gerber BMF with the saw back!

When Vampire Gerbil said I was not a total prat!:p

There are other people I would like to thank, but I have to go, places to be and all that!

More than anything I would like to thank all the formites here who put up with me when I was an idiot and brought me round into a half wit rather than an idiot! Cheers!:)

Some of my best experiences centre around those Appeals for Help.

I am constantly and pleasantly surprised by the enormous number of caring people in these forums. Usually, we have this bunch of cantankerous and occasionally loud guys who climb all over one another.

Then something near-tragic happens and we see this same bunch knocking one another down to extend a helping hand. Almost brings a tear or two to the eye.

It's nice to know those "hard on the exterior" diehards are really softies on the inside. It brings a warm glow that normally comes with one of those Disney movies or on a special Christmas evening.

I cherish moments like these. It tells me that some of the nicest and kindest people are the ones who own the sharpest and most stunning knives around. And even if I don't have their kind of knife collection, I am not envious because I know their best gifts are right there in their hearts and they are giving those away all the time.

If it weren't for the forums, I wouldn't have so many knives. :D

Seriously though... I have done a few good trades, I got to meet Seth Thomas (very nice guy to deal with and talk to), haven't won anything (at least on BFC) yet, but I think the forums have helped me understand life in general just a little better.

Wow, Crayola. Great thread. I've been here since the first month BFC started, back when I was a little tiny Chang at the age of 13 or so. This is a great place, so many generous people around here. I remember back in my Changbenza making days, I met a bunch of cool people... Brian Turner, Tim Herman, Richard Rosvall, Gus Kalanzis, Tom F., Elvis Lives, and Vampire Gerbil among others. I made Changbenza's out of cardboard and blended patterns with polymer clay and other odd handle materials and I shipped them all around the world. Some people still remember me as the Changbenza guy.

So many great folks have really spoiled me by giving me free parts and knives and other goodies. Mike Cooper (L6steel) has sent me steel, handle materials, books, and past issues of BLADE to help me out with learning knifemaking. Kit and Max have also helped me out of a bunch with knifemaking. Last year, Gus K sent me a set of carbon fiber scales. Richard Rosvall has helped me out with wood working stuff, and I even got a La Griffe for Christmas from him. MD2020 sent me a 3M mask and some filters... I'm pretty sure I would have gotten advanced silicosis or something if it wasn't for him. :D Once, I was having problems fixing up one of my BM knives, and ArtSig1 sent me one of his BM 940's. Once when I was vacationing in California, I got to visit RW Clark and he let me spend two afternoons learning knifemaking from him (great guy, and great knives he makes!). Brett Bennett sent me a Sears sander back when I didn't have a grinder (I have since gotten a Grizzly, and the Sears has been passed on to another guy who needed a machine).

Anyways, BladeForums.com is the best net community I've ever been on! One day when I get better at grinding knives, I'm going to have to have a knife giveaway to give back to the community that's been so generous to me.

The best bits:

1. Becoming an acepted member of the Usual Suspects - as good a bunch of people that you will get anywhere.

2. Being able to spend time sharing ideas and fun with my fellow knifenuts with out feeling an outcast.

3. Being able to help people by taking part in the charity auctions -thanks Tim!! :D

4. Meeting the General in person was an experience - I guess I should be glad that it was not VG....

5. Thank you to Spark for making this the first and last place that I look at on the web every day - $30 per year is Excellent Value. :D

6. Thank you to our moderators - you may not be perfect (who is?) but you do a great job.

7. Being introduced to Les Robertson and Patrick Ma who seem to take all of my money. :(

There are too many others but these should give you the idea...

Regards,

Ed

You really don't want to see a grown knifemaker cry do you?

WOW, where to start!

I stopped knifemaking when Bob Engnath died. I had no heart to make knives and just walked away from all the relationships I had built.

I sold off a few of my old knives on Ebay to pay for a new digital camera about a year ago. Those sold well, so I decided to finish up a couple of blades I had laying around. That was the start of a slightly renewed interest in knives.

Then I stumbled across one of the other forums. That lead me to find this one. You guys have changed my life. I am dead serious. If it had not been for all the great guys on this forum I would not be making knives right now. The support, friendship and caring that you guys dish out is simply unbeleiveble. I sell 90% of my knives to you guys. You basically support my family. I have developed friendships here that will last with me for many years.

I had to write this right now because I just came in from my mailbox. In my mail were several greeting cards, from members of the forums, wishing me well on my new daughter. That totally floored me guys! Typing best wishes on a computor is wonderfull and is greatly appreciated. But then on top of that, to go out and get cards and mail them.

You guys knock me out. There truely is not a better group of guys and gals anywhere. I mean that with all my heart!

Chang - It was my pleasure. You are welcome back anytime. And when are we going to get to see some of your work?
