Post Your Camping/Backpacking Traditions

It's not really something we do while camping but the first big weekend we camp; Memorial Day! It is something we look forward to a much as Christmas. We have been going to the same area for over 30 years and I hope that my son will someday be able to bring his family. This year will be very special because he turns 18 next month and starts college in the fall. He has been talking about this trip since the beginning of cold weather.

Reading some of these traditions makes me realize there's a lot of great ideas out there. I'm especially taking to beer and chili by a fire. We'd all have fun on each others' hikes!

Not so much a tradition during the trip, but afterwords hitting up a Mcdonalds dirty, sweaty, and smelling of woodsmoke and to eat up all the calories lost on the trip.

my 20 year camping ritual is steak on a stick.
I chop a 2or 3lb sirloin tip into chunks and marinade with 1/2 can beer, 1/8 cup montreal steak spice with garlic and pepper in a doubled ziploc.\
Leave in the fridge overnight to soak then freeze it and they are ready to go
Bring an onion and a pepper to skewer up.
Love seeing the faces of people cooking hotdogs and marshmallows at night drinking.
Usually good for 2 nights

something I have done the past year is to marinade a whole pork tenderloin as above but with 1/2 cup white wine and greek seasoning/lots of garlic. and run a stick right through for roasting rotisserie style with forked sticks or big rocks. Cooks in about 20 to 30 minutes. make sure you wrap in in foil for 5 min before carving.

Really good flavourful meat with no cleanup and easy carbs is my kind of camping. Too busy drinking after fishing to bother with fancy cooking.

I will even bring this stuff on a backpack trip (one meal portion)wrapped in my beater space blanket. So worth the weight and I have spent hours on the trail with dinner on the brain. Even in summer it stays cool enough in the center of the pack.

+1

Fires too. :D

when my friends and i go on our annual summer car camping trip, we always break out the beer the moment we arrive. we'll typically be drinking as we're setting up tents and tarps.

on the way out, since we usually leave after everyone else at a campsite is long gone (i.e. late morning) we've made it a tradition to blast music from a car stereo while dancing. that's followed by a funky group picture.

My tradition has always been to pack a frozen steak and a potato with aluminum foil for the first night. When we get our camp set up, we build a fire a put the steaks and potatos in the fire (wrapped in foil ). when I was in the scouts it was a hamburger pattie and a potato. It always taste better in the woods!
