I've got two of those fine little guys from Bryan Breeden (Sicily02 - on BF). They are awesome - the perfect firesteel strikers and designed for that specific task!

I knew it! My first ever custom was a Breeden CUB that I got last year when I went to meet Bryan. Great guy, and now it looks like I've got to place another order. Thanks,

Now who is posting their fire from last night????????????????? Dude's this is a long weekend!

Now thats a fire!! - Nice job Mneedham - and kudos for the survival fire spoon!

Cpl. Punishment,

Yep, he's a chip off the old blockhead! You can almost hear the banjo music can't you......

Okay - during my walk today I pocketed a couple types of natural tinders - phragmities tops and milkweed seed pods. Today was a little competition to see which was the better flame catcher. I also grabbed a few stalks of dried/dead CDN Thistle from last year and used it as kindling.

The tools: (with Tankhouse Ale):

I set them both up in the fire pit - check out those nice ashes, they were from yesterday's fire - burn't right to nothing!

First up was the milkweed seed pod, fluffed up. One strike off the Doan ferro and poof flames that caught the thistle. I thought - ding ding ding, we have a winner!

Next up - the fragmites head. One strike off the Doan ferro and poof flames caught that thistle. I guess you'll have to call it a draw.

By the time I took my pic, the fire was well on its way. Just needed to add the wood now.

Okay, if you haven't done so already in this thread yet, you have two more nights left. Remember one thing and only one thing....

POST YOUR FIRES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's some mighty fine fire pictures, kgd, even though it's in a barbeque!!

BTW, the Phragmites seed heads will blow into flame from a coal. I don't know if I've ever tried Milkweed pappus, but I have my doubts. Might change the results from a draw.

Guess I'll try it out - maybe tomorrow.

Oh, and yes, I have to upload my pictures, first.

Testing of some wax/cotton ball/toilet paper roll "tablets". The formula was originally found over at Hoods Woods.

Tablet thickness. 1/4" - 1/2" (I wasn't paying attention to the cut when slicing.)

That tablet burned right at 24 minutes. Video to follow. (Processing now and will upload to Youtube as soon as possible.) Yes I filmed the whole thing from lighting to last ember.

Part 1 is live:
Fire test 1

Part 2:
Fire test 2

Part 3: The end. Threw in an REI Stormproof match at the end to see if the leftovers would light it.

Man, it got nasty out here K, I will try for tomorrow, might go out tonight and see what I got, been raining for two days now.

OK Ken, first of all, I have to tell you that when Phil and I went out yesterday, it was with full intention to, besides taking Spring shoot pictures, to get a comprehensive fire photo journey for your thread, being the obsequious type I am and all. We had chert and steel, ferro rods and fire straws, modified lantern lighter, hand drills, bow drills and hearth (truthfully). However, those damn photos take more work than I thought - God help Les Stroud!

So we ran out of time, and it was getting too damn cold anyway, so being the consummate woodsmen that we are, we retired to the van for a beer and a quick trip to Harvey's for some grits. I did feel bad that we hadn't contributed to your thread though, although a couple more beer assuaged that feeling. :)

Anyway today, after getting my van back from the Krankenhaus, I was determined not to let my fellow Canuck and BladeForums brother down (that's you, Ken :D), so I headed out to the local woods, armed with my trusty bow drill (the hour was getting late, so I couldn't f*** around).

Finally, I found a spot that wouldn't draw attention from the local gendarmes, and I proceeded to set up my gear. I rushed myself somewhat, because my GPS told me it would be sunset in about an hour - a big mistake (should never rush friction fire :().

Here's a picture of the hearth and the new divot.

So, anyway, I worked my guts off (damn, I'm out of shape :o). Wait, is that smoke?

I am now going to reveal an ancient, heretofore unrevealed, Chinese technique for blowing the coal into flame. I think at this point a vow of secrecy is indicated, but my alcohol-created bonhomie says screw it! See here.

SUCCESS!!!!! A rush job, but successful, none the less.

Hey, you didn't say how big the fire had to be! Let me remind you, your's was in a barbeque!

One final thing - an important thing - for Ken's eyes only:

Thanks for looking, my brothers, and may the Easter Bunny be generous and kind to one and all.

I really like these assignment threads. I wish I had the means to go out and whip up a primitive fire set and have done that instead, but this will have to do. Also wanting to try one of thos misch metal rods. Those look sweet!
