It could happen:Pocket knives, even swiss army knives become illegal. The knife shop closes. Immigration and Customs stop all knives coming into the country. You are cut off from your collection of knives. How would you improvise? Please post pics and thoughts of what you would create using found materials in your area to provide yourself with some kind of edc blade. Might be fun to see what people come up with!

Silly premise.

Cutlery would still be available for the kitchen and tableware.

.

For self defense I would prolly use something that would be low key and wouldn't draw attention.

I made something like this the other day actually. The version I made was blunt but it could be easily sharpend. I epoxied an aluminum rod into a bic pen for a kubotan-ish weapon(if I wanted a sharpened version I wouldnt use Al). I sold one of these on ebay but since it didnt go for very much I'm guessing it really was a dumb idea though.

For slicing I would prolly go with a sharpened credit card.

In Canada we have the two dollar coin which is quite large and would make a nice slitter/slicer, and in a pinch could probably skin out small animals and butcher the meat.

Any piece of metal can be ground into a blade. Heck you don't even need stones, just start rubbing it on the sidewalk.
Also, if metal isn't available, or you are in the woods, a flaked stone would do.

Plenty of pieces of metal around. Just watch any prison movie. Before that though Id just grab my chefs knife(being as its a tool of trade I dont see how they could take it away from me,unless they plan on eating everything with their hands). Also a lawn mower blade makes a handy machete.

Unless they take away my bench grinder, my angle grinder, my files, my hammer, my anvil, the train tracks down the road, or anything on the planet harder than steel that could be used to grind, and any conceivable access I could have to even bar stock, vehicle springs, old tools, etc, I would just go make more.

There is absolutely no way to take away the ability of people to make decent knives. I wouldn't be bothering with prison shanks, I'd be heating up some spring steel in a pile of coals on the hibachi and making a brand new knife.

I mean come on, it's really not very difficult to grind steel into a short, shallow, wide wedge and then shape a handle with a couple of slabs of wood, some sandpaper, and epoxy it together. Most guys could have a very good knife in an afternoon.

A piece of broken glass. By flintknapping you can get a better edge if necessary.

Man got by quite well for a hundred thousand years with a nice flaked piece of obsidian or flint. A toothbrush handle makes a decent preasure tool to push with. Wear goggles and watch your eyes.

I spent time messing around with neo tribal metal smithing ... I thought for a long time that I would be OK as long as I can find a car or shovel or rail spike ..... the rest is tho not exactly "easy" is not a serious problem ...

I'd buy more guns and ammo with all the money I saved not being able to buy knives (before they began banning guns). Then I'd use the lawnmower blades, the leaf springs, etc to grind a few of various sizes.

I have like 30 pounds of Obsidian I brought back from California, I would like to play with it some day and try to make something.

Would anybody be willing to post some pics of a knife that you made with only found materials using the most simple means possible? In other words no belt grinders, automatic hammers and like.
