Post your "sheeple" freakout experience here

NO ONE is calling anyone "sheeple" for not carrying a knife, or even for not liking knives around.

But the ones who make up the zero tolerance rules, the ones who cry to the boss because a handyman has a multitool, the ones who think SAKs are illegal -- those are sheeple. They bought into a media frenzy about weapons, and they won't even discuss any other point of view.

I'm glad someone gets my point. And to act like the term isn't intended to be insulting is downright ridiculous, IMO, but it's not worth fighting over so I won't be bothering to beat a dead horse on this one.

OOOOH...

I think I've gone and misunderstandimated the term. I thought that, in addition to the folks who flip out and turn into complete wing-nuts when they see a knife, 'Sheeple' also referred to all the folks who are generally opposed to carrying knives (or guns or whatever the case) in one way or another, etc.
 
It is fine if they are opposed to carrying a knife themselves. It is not ok if they are opposed to everyone else not carrying them as well.

I'm doing a short stint at a local college learning about dementia and nutrition for the elderly.

The tutor for the dementia course was talking to the group while fiddling with her necklace, when it broke and scattered beads onto the floor. She collected them up and put them in her bag and carried on with the lecture. That afternoon I'd finished writing before anyone else so I offered to put her necklace back together and used my SAK to do it. She was very grateful and nobody batted an eye lid at the pocket knife (as well they shouldn't!).

This week a different tutor had a thread hanging from her skirt and I pointed it out to her. I pulled out the scissors on the SAK and snipped off the thread for her. She said "it's nice having boys about because they always have a pen knife".

That's a joke, right?

... because if you were at Applebees with me and you just randomly reached over into my table with a knife to cut a string hanging off of my sweater, I'd freak out and possibly put a gun in your face, myself.

exactly! if I was just eating and somebody reached over to my table with a knife I would be upset as well

Not exactly. No one said that they are against anything. We are not even against sheeple. Some of us are just sharing our experiences. If you're just going about your business not bothering a soul, and someone goes out of their way to hassle or insult you because you have the foresight to keep a tool on you, wouldn't you think there is something wrong? Maybe you like being singled out and deemed a criminal or "psycho" because you use one of mans oldest tools.
 
This story happened about 20 years ago.I was at work and had to cut some strapping off a pallet of cases.So I whipped out my Spyderco Police,one handed,and cut the strapping off.One of the gals that worked there made a comment to a friend of mine,that I looked like a serial killer stalking my next victim.My friend told me about it later and we had a few chuckles,but,it started to make me think.I was always,and still am,more prudent after that.
 
I EDC 3 different tools that have knives, but amongst non-knife people I whip out the SAK and open the smaller blade to cut open a box - after almost a decade of carrying it I have never once had a problem. I did of course have to make sure I didn't carry it the couple of times I was flying though.

This one I understand - as a bouncer there are going to be more times that you will be in a situation where being armed is not a good idea. You certainly wouldn't want an unruly drunk pulling your knife out of your pocket!

I don't think you get it. Sheeple are referred to here when someone is irrationally afraid of the mere presence of a knife. No one said if you don't carry or like knives you are sheeple. I don't see why that upsets you so much.:confused: You really need to get over yourself and calm down. So if someone doesn't think the way you do they are a jerk?:rolleyes: Pot meet kettle. Also how many sheeple are reading this stuff anyway. I can't stand sheeple but I don't go around calling people out for it.
 
As a relative newbie to the forums, it's good to see the term "sheeple" defined in this thread. Because I've seen it used in various ways beyond the narrow scope some have given it here.
 
Sal Glesser has referred to "sheeple" as a term that cuts off our thinking, and prefers "non-knife people", whom we could educate to see the value of the tools we carry.

I think there are people who put themselves beyond a non-knife category by reacting negatively so emotionally. It's hard for me to see how I could reach out to someone like that -- but, in theory, it's possible. :)

I think it's possible to reach out to rational people who will take the time to listen. I don't, however, think it's possible to get through to the people we've been talking about in this thread. I believe they're acting out of mindless emotion, and you can't get through to them: they don't want to listen.

Exactly. :thumbup:

The really funny thing is that they can be using a 14" Chef knife and totally flip out over a little 4" folder.

In their minds that little 4" folder is a weapon while the 14" Chef Knife isn't...

We know how stupid that sounds, but to them and in their minds that is how it is.

That term was cute but it does need to die. Yes it's a good shorthand for saying "people who think/act alike" but it's also arrogant and condescending because it assumes there is something special about the author which makes him or her not a sheep. We're pretty much all sheeple.
Sorry for digressing.
 
Thanks for paying attention, Jesse, but we've had one of us after another explain that's NOT what we mean by "sheeple".
