Not sure about Benchmade but Spyderco makes a trainer variation of a few of their models (Endura, Delica, P'Kal) that have red scales. So they won't make the real deal with red scales for safety reasons.

Actually, Spyderco makes trainers (with unsharpened blades) that have red scales to identify them as trainers (Delica and Endura, IIRC). You could buy a trainer and swap the scales with, for example, a standard black one. I've thought about doing that myself...
