I've bought several knives in the USA and had them sent over to the UK. No problem, though sometimes I have to pay some customs/sales duty.

I've just bought, for a friend, a benchmade on ebay. The chap is having problems sending it. Its been returned once.

What is the best way/cheapest way to send a folder/knife to the UK? Which carrier is the best/easiest?

Has anyone had any similar problems?

Thanks.

Reasons:

UPS: said they wouldn't ship that type of knife.
USPS: said he had to prove he was a knife dealer.

The knife in question is a Bencjhmade Spike, linerlocker.

I don't know why he had to tell them what was in the package.

I think your chances will be better in TGB&U.

Have him to ship it USPS global priority small envelope (5.00)
Mark the custums tag as gift, hand tool, with a low value.

I've sent several items marked "used garden tools" to the U.K. as gifts, which I suppose the recipient could have used for duties other than gardening. ;)

Yup just do that and it will be fine. I sent a collapsable baton to the UK, wrapped it really crappy (so it doesnt look like a commercial item) and listed it as a Motorcycle suspension strut :)

I find Americans are paranoid about insurance and labels, is your PO so bad? I have been sending things all over the world and never lost a thing.

As far as customs are concerned, lying is the best policy.

As far as lying to customs is concerned, if they do find out, OUCH. Just don't call it a "Benchmade Spike stiletto style stabbing knife"

Calling it "cutlery" is legitimate without raising eyebrows. Go with u812's suggestion -- USPS Global Priority. Whichever USPS rep said he had to prove he was a knife dealer was an idiot.

But ... see www.vistaprint.com and get yourself a bunch of nice-looking business cards. If anyone wants to know why I have a bag full of knives on the way to a show, or I'm selling or trading or shipping knives by mail, mine says
