Ok I know this is what is used to dye antler and stag. But how do you use it. I have heard many differant ways to do this with tea/coffee and shoe polish. but I want it to be a deeper more amber color and was told this is what to ues. Lets hear all those secret recipies.

Fiebings spirit based leather dye. Not my secret. Bill Moran used it for dying maple and I learned about using it on stag from Russ Andrews. The knives on the front page of my website were done with medium brown because I had to lcean the stag off all of the "field gunk" and it left the pieces too white. i used the brown and then after i shaped the handles and exposed the white reas, I touched them up a bit with yellow dye to darken the light spots a tad, but not to leave them dark like on pervious knives where I had used dark brown dye after shaping the handle. I thought it turned out quite well and apparently other folks agreed. The probelm that I have with PP is that it can turn purple on you.

Potassium permanganate is what was used to color bone scales, not antler.
Fiebings works well (wear rubber gloves.) I use it on the raw stag, and color the grooves with black Magic Marker. I then seal it with Krylon clear lacquer. As you work the stag and grind it down, the lighter color comes out. Fiebings has several colors, an these can be used with striking effect.

Rusty; I use it all the time.i wash the antler or bone with rubbing alcohol. i use a under layment of minwax (ebony wood finish stain and seal ) . we put it on the whole antler, bone, with a sponge brush and after painting it on we let set for about 3-5 sec and then take a dry rag wipe it off. this leaves it gray, thats what i want. then let it air dry about 5min. during that time i mix up the Potassium permanganate at a rate of 1 teaspoon of Potassium permanganate with 3 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol , mix well.
put it on with a sponge brush let dry, it will start off purple but thats ok. After it drys
do a lite rag buff.
i only give it one coat , to me thats dark enough for me.
i let it dry and i put horse hoof polish one coat .
looks fantastic.

So you use the hoof polish as a sealer? You do mean the clear sealer right, I have horses and know that stuff can get messy.

i use the clear, it comes with a dobber and i drain most of it off the dobber.
it drys fast but i leave it over night. it seal great with no chiping that i can find .

try it on a old antler an see.
the only way it get messy is more then one coat or to heavy.

I mix the pp with water.
I paint it on the antler only where I want it. Use a fine brush to darken the natural color of the antler. Leave the white white nice contrast.
I finish with super glue.Just rub it on with a powder free vinyl glove. Not thick enough to see layers or runs. If it's to shiney tone it down with a white scorch brite pad.
My $ worth
Take care

Well I got a better question where are you ordering Pottasium Pergamate from? Two places I use to get it from are not carrying it anymore. Probably something to do with the EPA or Green Planet crap I am sure but there is another side to this stuff for the responsible person using chemicals.

Is it marketed at Ace Hardware under some other name? Would it be in the lawn and garden dept? I was in our local Ace Hardware not to long ago and the lady helping me didn't seem to have a clue what I was talking about.
I told her it was and oxyidizer, that it was used in wells and ponds, and she told me I needed to go where they sold fish supplies! I guess you call that "clueless in Ace"! :D

look in a home lumber yard , home depot, Menard's, lowe's. look under water softeners

I have tried the local Lowes and Home Depot and figured I was in the right area, when you say water softener. That's why I was asking for a product name or a department to go to or something like that. Because when you say Pottassium Permanganate they get this blank stare. Kinda like you just asked them if they liked sex or something, and they don't know wheter they do or not! :D
It was the same way when I asked for pool salt at Home Depot, I was told they didn't have any such thing. I walked back to the pool section looked for myself and found it. I then took the bag back to show the guy the label, "Morton Pool Salt 5lbs". I swear it's getting so you got to know evrything becasue the folks that work there don't! Now I ain't trying to make anyone that works at one of these stores mad because there are a few that know there job, they are just getting to be few and far between!

The days of the mom and pop hardware are almost over. Where you go in and ask the guy behind the counter, sippin his coffee ,where something is, so he tells you and never has to get up to go look for his self. Now it's about quantity and not qulaity when it comes to the hardware business. Sad to see them go the way of the dinasour.

Did yo try the link you posted?

http://nativeway.safewebshop.com/potassium_permanganate.html

That's the very reason I have not been able to get it because they won't ship it anymore. I have got to find it locally somewhere. Thanks for all the leads though. Maybe some one locally will carry it!
No, I haven't ordered from them. It was just something I had in my bookmarks.
I have however ordered from Jonas as recently as last year ( pp lasts me a while) but I don't know if they ship it anymore.
Have you tried Jonas?
God bless,
Iz
