where to buy? my local hardware store wants $216 to have it shipped to their store. I wasn't prepared for that.

In Canada, I haven't found it...

Your new regs after 9-11 really screw us on getting some basic supplies.

Here's why
Solid KMnO4 is a strong oxidizer and thus should be kept separated from oxidizable substances. Reaction with concentrated sulfuric acid produces the highly explosive manganese(VII) oxide (Mn2O7). When solid KMnO4 is mixed with pure glycerol or other simple alcohols it will result in a violent combustion reaction.

It is an oxidizer.
If you have to have it shipped, it will cost the world because of the haz mat shipping it requires

also labelled as
KMnO4
permanganate of potash

In US you can try

-pool suppliers
-Water softener places, used on water treatment.
some report it in Sears stores water softener area
-Aquarium stores
-pharmacy

www.soapgoods.com

Look under ingredients. It's $12.95 for 1 lb which is all you will ever need.I mix mine in a large mouth quart jar.Just mix to saturation which is untill it stops dissolving in the water. It only takes a few spoonfuls for a quart.

I can find it in small quantities at pool cleaning supply places or landscape supply stores with a pond section.

Find your local water treatment plant and ask them for a small quanty, most use kmno4 for iron and maganese removal. We use about 50lbs everyday

Sears and other large stores that sell water softening equipment carry it. Also plumbing suppliers, pool suppliers,Many big-box hardware stores, etc. Look in the water softener and water heater area.

Have you checked Rollingthunderpyro.com? That's where I get my KClO4.

:rolleyes:i would think he knows where he can get some by now

Yes, but we need to give him as many options as possible. Just order less than 5 lbs. or you will have issues getting it shipped. On its own, an oxidizer isn't dangerous. Properly packed, it poses no danger during shipping.

It is often sold on eBay in the powdered form for a reasonable price. They will ground ship it to you.
Potassium permanganate is an oxidizer. The reason it is so high is the shipping.
That plane that went down in the Everglades a few years ago was carrying oxidizers. It is illegal to air ship any oxidizer nowadays. It can only be shipped by ground.

I don't want to appear dumb, but what would this be used for in knife making:confused::confused:

Thanks
Allen

I use it to dye antler (makes it look more natural on faded pieces) and bone.

this piece was almost white before I soaked it and then sanded it back a little.
