Anyone use a potato for a patina? I used one over the week end and still wrapped to see how it comes out. i did one for a guy last week and put some grease on it so when done it turned out striped. looked great.

Haven't tried using a potato yet for patina effects, but I have tried using a spray bottle with salt and vinegar. That works really well. Also if you use gun blue over the blade then spritz it lightly with household bleach, it causes a nice etched damascus like effect. I'll give the potato thing a try next time.

I tried it on a knife and the parts of the knife that were in the potato but not actually touching the potato ,such as the middle of the hollow grind, rusted. I was not pleased with the finish and ended up redoing it another way as it was also very uneven as one part of the blade was dark one wart wouldn't be and another part would be rusted. However, it probably works a little better on a thinner blade as my larger blade tended to split the potato a smaller blade would probably have more consistent contact.
