This article lays out almost everything that could go wrong with this young man's quest. From mind set, to lack of knowledge, lifestyle to metaphysics. I feel for the family, and hope for a good outcome, but I fear things have already gone wrong.

An Oklahoma teenager who was inspired to live off the land by the movie "Into the Wild" is the target of a search effort in remote, rugged country in southeastern Oregon.

Wow, didn't hear about this until now. Pretty grim. I can't fathom anyone, even a kid, going into something like that so unprepared. He was planning on eating berries? Really? An hour researching living in the wilderness would tell you how unrealistic that would be. Yet, this kid was supposed to have really researched this. I dunno, makes me sad for the parents and the kid.

This is why I laugh anytime someone says they'd rather survive with a person who has alot of confidence as opposed to people with alot of skills. The whole "who would you want with you, Bear or Lundin" thing. It just doesn't work like that. Confidence comes from skills otherwise your just fooling yourself. There was a UFC fighter who died a while back doing something similar. Sometimes a little humility will go a long way. Sad, hope they find him.

"We tried to tell him, berries don't grow in wintertime." LOL..:D

Hopefully he gets found/turns up, another lost hippie.

DC

Hope he was considerate enough to wear cotton. Nobody wants him littering up the countryside like an old styrofoam burger box.

and to investigate some churches that practice a South American religion that uses a hallucinogenic tea as a sacrament

Thats your first warning sign right there.

he teen was well-prepared with gear he bought just before leaving

Buying the latest and greates does not make you a wilderness survivalist and you aint well-prepared, if you havent tested your gear.

The next day, Dustin called his girlfriend in Austin, Texas, to say he was lost after his GPS had sent him onto a road along the east side of Steens Mountain

How can you have a GPS and still be lost? Read the manual kid, theres bound to be a back-track function.

He read books like "Human Race: Get Off Your Knees," by David Icke

Reading to find a purpose with life is ok. But David Icke? The same David Icke that believes that reptilians control the world?

His mother said, "I think he got a lot off the Internet."

I think he found out by now, that there is something called cyberworld and something entirely else called the real world.

her son is a vegetarian, with no desire to kill animals to eat.

Good luck surviving without proteins.

"He thought he was going to eat berries,"

*facepalm.

It would make a good story around a camp fire if he lives to tell about it. It would also make a great lesson to tell around a camp if he dies.
He just might survive the ordeal. As there is something about stupid people that keeps them alive..

Because "investigating" anything that includes mind altering hallucinogenics has the potential to end in a bad way.

I see your point but using hallucinogenics inside a religious context is pretty common. If he was interested in just having a good time without that relgious framework then I totally agree with you.

Not to mention that the two churches referenced in the article are in Oregon. This kid's from Oklahoma. It depends on that part of Oklahoma he lived in and the part of Oregon he was planning on going to, of course, but generally, those're two pretty different climates and terrains.

Define "common."

Sounds like he had the same skillsets as every "what's the BEST survival knife" poster we get here.

For those not familiar with the "Into the wild" book or movie, the subject died after walking into the wilderness, either from starvation or possibly poisoned from misidentified plants.

 Hey, I was going to go watch that after reading this thread!!
