I found a pottery kiln at a estate sale. It is a Sitter brand? Only has low/medium/high setting. It's in ok shape and will go for $50 tomorrow. Decent sized. Wondering if the heating element could be hooked up to heat to precise temperatures and be useful as a heat treat oven?

You should PM James Helm. He "retasked" one to HT his tomahawks by cutting a rectangular hole in the lid so that he can suspend the hawks on wire.

There are some drawbacks, but the basic answer is:
Yes, they can easily be re-worked to run with precise control. Just add a PID controller. They are usable for some other types of HT equipment, too.

The current thread on fluidized bed sand pots is one use for a good size pottery kiln plugged into a PID controler.

I'm going to use one for fluidized sand pot.

Too late now, but I forgot to ask - What size is the chamber, and what is the wattage and power requirements?

Probably about 15" diameter and 10" deep. Seems a little small? 230v power is all I can remember.

That's a great idea Stacy. Using it for a fluidized sand. I have one and might have to try it out.
