Talked to a local powder coating buisness and they said they would have to heat the knife between 400-500F to coat does this pose a threat to the heat treatment?
It depends on the steel. If it is tool steel which is tempered at or below that temperature then you will draw the temper a little. If it is a high allow steel that tempers up around 1000 degrees, it won't bother it much. It still isn't good to get hardened steel that hot though.
