Hi all!

I am gonna make a power hammer. But..... not sure where to start. I have an idea in my head but that is as far as I have got. Anyone out there with more experience than me have any suggestions? I may build it similar to the Wizard's Forge "Rusty" but again, not sure where to start.
Any advice or even plans would be a great help!

Thanks
Brad Hicks

The Rusty/Dusty/Crusty hammers are not too hard to build or run. They are a good place to start. Google " Appalachian Power Hammer Plans ".

A few years ago I had the choice of building a crusty or a tire hammer. I chose the tire hammer which in my opinion is a bit better quality, but also cost more to build. I couldn't be more pleased with the results. Plans can be purchased online for 30.00

I like the leaf spring helve idea for simplicity, with a tire hammer clutch down low in the back. Always seemed the easiest way to build a solid hammer with scrounged parts. Plus, I've seen serious debate about whether or not the spring helve is as efficient as the DuPont linkage (Little Giant) type. It's close anyways.

Or find yourself a broken down hammer that you can buy real cheap and rebuild, like I did. Takes time to find the right deal, though. I just lucked into it really.

The route I went with is a Rusty-style hammer with a spare tire clutch, like Salem mentioned. It makes for a simple, easy to understand design with the control of a tire clutch. If floor space is a premium, it does take a larger foot print than some of the other designs, but not much.

One nice advantage of the Rusty style is that it's fairly easy to scale the size between a 15 lb ram (the original) and a 100 lb ram (the largest home made ones I've seen).

Here's a video of mine:

Gonza thank you for those galleries, wonderful!

When building a powerhammer, you can build it exacty to plans and not learn much, or you can look at hammers and understand and learn what makes them work, then design one from that using what materials you have. Start looking at plans, then gather materials.
