In a few days I will acquire a 50 lb Little Giant! Question I have is there a method to place horse stall mats or wooden timbers between the hammer and concrete shop floor so the hammer will work sufficently without cracking the concrete floor? Anyone having any experience with power hammering inside their shop without major modifications to the existing concrete floor??

A 50lb LG should be OK on most 4" slab floors. If it were me, I'd anchor it to the floor with bolts to keep it from walking around. A lot of guys do put stall mat or something under them.

If you look here you'll find links to PDFs of the original manufacturer's foundation specs. As is said on that page though, they're excessive....

If you got questions...you can talk to THE MAN.

SID is the walking talking ENCYCLOPEDIA of ALL THINGS LITTLE GIANT!

As far as the floor question...I had my #50 on a 4" floor it did ok...but I did not do a lot of hammering..over time I believe I would have cracked the floor.

However, having said that...I did shim it with a piece of 3/8 inch conveyor belt. You can find this at any concrete supplier, gravel company etc. They usually have old dead belts laying around.

I honestly believe that makes a HUGE difference.

Use Redheads for floor anchors....do not use regular "lag" type anchors as I beleive they will pull out over time.

It always amazes me how much "vibration" can destroy the seemingly "indestructible ".

Good luck and have fun with yer new hammer.

Oh, and when you talk to SID tell him I said HI! and please ask him about the class he holds once a year. They re-buils a hammer from the ground up including pouring new babbit....

For anybody who has a Little Giant hammer, this class is an absolute "GOTTA DO"!

Congratulations on the purchase. You will really enjoy your new hammer.

Shane's advice was right on, any questions you have take to Sid or Keri. Their rebuilding class is set for March. If you have a chance attend, the wealth of information that you learn is next to none.

FOR 50 # Hammers I like to make a foundation using 4x4's and allthread. thru bolt the hammer to the foundation then with angle iron make clips to bolt to the foundation and floor. This raises the hammer 4" I like that. keeps it from moving around and all that other stuff good luck and have fun with your new hammer.

Don't worry about the floor with a 50#.
I set mine on horse mat and ran two pins through the holes in the base so I didn't have to chase it around the shop.
Now, go make Damascus.

I asked Sid about horse stall mat for my 25lbs that I am getting and he suggested using something a bit thinner because the thicjk mat make the hammer a little "mushy" I am having him build me a 4x4 base as part of the rebuild process.

you will want to raise it a little off the floor. 4 - 6 inches. a really nice base can be made from channel iron with rebar welded into it in a checker board pattern. located the holes for the hammer and weld in bolts or pipes with nuts in them and finally weld at least a 3/8ths inch or thicker plate on the top. turn the whole shebang over and fill the entire cavity with concrete and finish it off make it the size L X W that will give you about a foot on the sides and room for your foot in the front. put a piece of 1/4 in belting between the hammer and the base and a piece between the base and the floor and you are good to go.

Thanks guys the information is invaluable and l will be able to start making damascus at my shop rather to infringe on my buddy like I have been doing since last July. The truth of the matter is I have two power hammers heading my way the other is a 50 lb. Dienelt & Eisenhardt Power Hammer with 3 sets of dies. I know, I know! What the heck do you want with two hammers. My thoughts are use both and keep the one I like best, redneck reasoning on my part. Thanks again for the information. Johnny

Dang, i supoose 2 hammers is not too many??? I might want to keep both!

You'll keep both :) At least until you trade one towards a bigger hammer...Then again, with 2 hammers, you could make more damascus and just buy a 3rd! :D
