Power Shortages

Also as Karda implied but may have not been obvious enough about, It is important that HI keep a low profile in the neighborhood. Things like generator noise, solar panels visible, New looking wires running around between buildings ANYthing that brings attention because it could be out of the ordinary is likely to cause problems. That makes it even more difficult to identify ways around these power shortages that will not have an impact on the Company or the Kamis. I love how everyone comes together to think of ideas and offer suggestions. I think it is awesome too that Karda and Aunty are able to keep us informed of these types of issues and willing to do so. Even if we can't come up with anything better (though I expect we will keep offering attempts) at the least we still are able to offer the patience and understanding that fits so well with the environment that Aunty keeps as HI's core values. Thank you guys for encouraging my belief that we have great folks here.

What is the situation there, are the Maoists still trying to get "donations"? Sometimes, looking at history, I can't decide whether Nazism or Communism was the bigger evil. I hate Commies, as anyone living under such a regime would come to.

Moon, I have to admit that I am just interpreting things Karda has said in the past about this situations. I will leave it to him and others more knowledgeable to comment on the details of the situation.

A news story written two months ago:

Extortion terror
Tuesday, January 6th, 2015
Nepali Times
..................................................................................................................

Karobar, 6 January

At a time when the deadline for the new constitution nears and the political transition is in a sensitive phase, CPN-M Maoists of the Netra Bikram Chand (Biplab) faction have started extorting business all over the country. Traders and businessmen have started turning their mobile phones off and not coming to their offices and shops in order to avoid the extortion demands. “They are sowing terror in the entire business community,” said Pashupati Murarka of the FNCCI. Parties inside the Constituent Assembly, including members of the 31-member group led by the UCPN(M) are also involved in extortion, and using the excuse of organizing mass meetings to raise money. The targets are businessmen, shopkeepers, schools, contractors, civil servants, VDC secretaries and ordinary people. The CPN-M’s Padam Rai said: “We are not hermits, of course we need to raise money for our political organization, and that is why we have asked people to donate money to us.” Police Chief of the mid-western region Keshar Bahadur Shahi said there had been a flurry of complaints from businesses complaining about extortion in recent days. “Some have lodged complaints in writing, while others are more careful because of the fear of repercussions,” Shahi said.

Yes, Shavru, you hit the nail exactly on the head. Everything we do must be careful. Even speaking here.
The only real option at present Auntie and I could come up with would be to build a shop here in the states. It would be vastly expensive to do so, we would not be able to bring many kamis to work at one time and our khukuri would no longer be Nepal made. It is not really a solution.
About the only option readily available to us is the one that has been already used for years. Keep chin down and have stiff upper lip. Ask for patience and understanding. Hope we can all weather these things together as we always have.

Or get Bookie a Huey and a crew of operators past and present and level the playing field.

Boost me chair up on the deck and I believe I could run a door gun with a song in my heart and a smile on my face.

But I'll go along with the chin down, stiff upper lip and patience, probably easier I reckon.

They say that to me a lot at work. I'm a born rabble rouser, I make no apology for speaking the truth. My boss is an idiot, there I said it...

Rolling in hot, Bawanna. Bookie for real once upon a time in a land far, far away.

That is just crazy...I'll leave it to that. I don't want to stir any trouble for anyone.

We need to get a few of our shooting enthusiast to stand guard at the shop. We can do rotation, I know I have level 3A armor with plate carrier, so should every red blooded American. I would probably use the AK in that region, maybe some 5.11 stuff... anyone else in? ;)

there are lots of low key new technologies that could be employed here, I will do some research maybe we can find something that does not look too obvious but does the job that is needed---- I think the main thing we can do is donate cash whenever we get the chance, to help keep auntie helping the kami who obviously face a helluva lot just to provide us fair trade blades.

the money could pay for whatever is needed and when it is needed-- though the final goal I think would be operation kami escape; where we import all the kami, all of their family and set up a shop in the usa that works with the shop in nepal to elevate the home but still protect the main business from exploitation by the wills of lesser men.

can't say enough how much I love HI and the people behind it; this is something they have been dealing with since the murder of the entire royal family and the rise of the maoists.-- everyone should read about that tragedy if you have not. very interesting, very strange, very old game. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nepalese_royal_massacre or just people being people.

Thanks for the info Gehazi, that's great reading. Sometimes I feel like we live in a bubble over here in the states. Thanks again for the info. I didn't realize how serious it was over there. Thanks again buddy

Perhaps we should leave everything as it is. No one has asked for this type of assistance and any thing we do that could increase awareness of HI/BirGhorka in Nepal could possibly backfire and extortion monies ending up being paid out or worse. For me, living in a fairy tale is lovely though it has it's draw backs, but I want this fairy tale to go on forever as it is--because I can't. Just my two cents.

I really really really love the USA when I hear about stuff like this, because I don't have to give out any kickbacks to anyone if I have a good year, and there is not a constant stream of people coming to me with guns asking for money.

in the usa we handle this by taxes !!! and I would much rather pay massive taxes and have a strong government than to have this kind of banditry in the countryside; like bookie, this place feels like a fairy tale sometimes because of how much I love it ( USA)-- I also like the fact that our last armed conflict on our soil was 150 years ago

but bookie has a great point-- lets just let HI decide how to play it, and give them plenty of donations to work with.
